Oil Change: Ready for Winter Driving?

The cold days of winter are at our door! If you haven't yet made time after the hot months of summer to schedule an oil change, do it now--it is not too late. Those high temperatures of summer probably played havoc on your vehicle's engine, especially relating to oil changes. Don't get caught out in the cold with unexpected engine problems.
If you are looking for quality Tune UP Princeton MN than visit our rumriver Auto Repair Shop Princeton MN. Also find us for discounted Oil Changes Princeton MN on quality oil change.

To get your vehicle ready for winter driving, here are a few tips.

    * Oil changes. When oil is cold, it thickens; when it heats up, it becomes thinner. It may have become too thin in hot weather and lost its cooling efficiency for the motor. Regular oil change are crucial when it comes to protecting your engine against extremes in weather.

    * Know the viscosity. Viscosity is measured using two numbers and a letter. For example, 10W-40; the first number (10) refers to the thickness at cold temperatures (0ºFahrenheit), and the second number refers to the thickness at high temperatures (212º Fahrenheit.) The first number is crucial for the cold months of winter--make sure your engine is protected at startup. The second number is more important once the motor is warmed up and running.

    * Types of oil and engine protection.

          o Synthetics - maintain a more consistent viscosity over a wide range of temperatures, but are more expensive and could be incompatible with certain older engines.

          o Synthetic blends - include a combination of both natural and synthetic, providing the benefits of synthetic without the higher cost.

          o Premium conventional oil – natural, and of a higher quality with increased levels of protection.

Your selection will depend on the climate in which you drive, compatibility with your vehicle, and of course, your budget.

To make sure your vehicle survives winter's cold temperatures, check your owner's manual for the best type of oil to use in your specific vehicle. If in doubt, be sure to ask your oil change specialist for advice.

Advice From A Tire Service Center About All-Season vs. Winter Tires

In order to stay up with your job, school, and other activities during the harsh winter months, you may be wondering whether you should purchase winter tires, otherwise known as snow tires, or just stick with all-season tires. For most severe winter weather conditions snow tires will help provide with enhanced traction. For help with purchasing the right type of tire for your specific vehicle and climate, ask your local tire service center to guide you through the process.

If you are looking for Air Conditioner Repair Princeton MN than your search can be over now with our Precision Auto Repair Princeton MN shop.Find Tires Princeton MN to have safe driving.

So that vehicle owners can make informed decisions about whether or not to purchase all-season or winter tires, consider the following tips offered by a tire service center:

Tread Compound & Design: Winter tires feature specialized tread compounds and advanced tread designs that help provide superior traction and shorter stopping distance, together with improved braking performance.
Road Conditions: You may have hills and sharp corners to navigate in addition to the harsh winter weather. In addition to inclement weather, you may have hills and sharp corners in your area, as well as unplowed snow, slush or ice. For advanced traction and control, winter tires can help you face those challenges.

Weather Conditions: If the winter temperature is consistently below 45°F or you're forced to drive in challenging winter conditions (snow, slush, ice, unplowed roads), winter tires may be a good choice for you. All-season tires do provide extra traction for wet and snowy conditions, but the enhanced traction and grip that winter tires provide assures that your winter driving is safer and more comfortable.

Performance: The amount and type of traction on your tires impacts your vehicle's starting, stopping and turning abilities on snowy or icy road surfaces.

Finding The Right Transmission Repair Shop

If it's time for a transmission flush, do you have a transmission repair provider you can trust? Finding a trustworthy auto shop can mean the difference between an effective transmission repair (which may include a transmission flush) or a shoddy one and a high cost repair rather than an affordable one.

If you are looking for Transmission Service Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Services Princeton MN shop. Also find Automotive Repair Princeton MN with our dedicated mechanic.

 Consider these options when choosing a transmission repair provider:

Independent Auto Shop vs. Dealership?

If you drive a late-model car and its power train warranty is still active, more than likely you will choose the dealership. However, if your vehicle is no longer under warranty, the biggest disadvantage to using a dealership is the higher cost. An independent auto shop that provides quality transmission repair may be able to provide repairs that are just as effective, but at a significantly lower cost.

Transmission Repair Specialist vs. General Auto Repair Mechanic?

If you've established a relationship with an auto service provider, ask for their opinion on your transmission repair problem—do you just need a transmission flush, or will it entail a major repair? If your preferred auto shop has the expertise and training needed to provide you with quality repair, you should by all means use them for the needed transmission flush or repairs. Or, if your auto mechanic does not provide transmission repair services, they may recommend an auto technician that you can trust, although you will typically ending up paying them a higher fee than for a general auto repair shop.

Warranties and Guarantees

No matter where you choose to get your repairs, getting a warranty or guarantee on the parts and labor is vital. Because you're spending hundreds or thousands of dollars, a warranty or guarantee on the actual workperformed, as well as the new parts installed, makes you a wise vehicle owner.

Is it time for a transmission flush? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com/ for more information about auto repair and vehicle detailing. Since 1997, our auto shop has served vehicle owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca and Zimmerman, MN.

Avoid Costly Car Repair: Follow This Inspection Schedule!

If you plan on keeping your old car rather than trading it for one straight off the showroom floor, you can help avoid a costly car repair by giving it a little extra attention. By checking a few car care items yourself, you can help keep your vehicle out of the car service center and money in your pocket. This means that in the long-run, a little time and money spent now will reap benefits later by maintaining your car's reliability and increasing trade-in value.

If you are looking for Quality Tire Repair Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Princeton MN shop. Also find Car Service Princeton MN mechanic with us.

Following the car service tips listed below will show you what kind of professional car repair is needed so you can have confidence in the reliability of your vehicle when needed!

Each Day:

    * Take a quick walk around your car and inspect it visually before heading out for the day. Have the tires have lost air, are there any new dents or scratches, or do you see a fluid leak? If you keep driving your car without knowing about of the issues, these little problems could become more serious problems.

Each Week:

    * Check the level of fluids (oil, coolant, brake, power steering, and windshield washer). Top off as necessary.
    * Check the air pressure in the tires (including the spare), depth of tread and overall condition. Schedule a tire repair if needed.
    * Make sure that all the lights are working--headlights, brake lights, turn indicators, back-up lights, etc., including the interior lights. Replace any burned-out bulbs.
    * Windshield wipers should be in good condition, keeping your windshield clean of streaks and smears.
    * All windows and mirrors should be clean and free of any cracks or chips.
    * Check for any damage that may cause your vehicle to operate poorly or that may cause a driving hazard (dented fenders can rub against tires and keep brakes from working properly).
    * Wash your vehicle regularly–the finish will last longer! Clean out the inside too!

Tip to Remember: Take care of your car, and it will take care of you with good car service for many miles to come!

Car Battery Replacement: Stay in Charge!

As most vehicle owners know, a car battery is vital to the proper performance of your vehicle. Even though a car battery seems to be fairly simple, it is helpful to know how it works. A little knowledge will help you understand why, even with good maintenance, your vehicle may require a car battery replacement sooner than expected.

Need solution for problems associated with Car Battery Princeton MN ? Find Air Conditioner Repair Princeton MN mechanic at our Rum River Auto Center Princeton MN shop.

You can learn how to keep your car battery running strong through the cold winter months. Remember these tips for the best cold-weather performance and avoid a premature car battery replacement:

  • Purchase the correct battery for your vehicle with the right Group Size and sufficient cranking power.
  • Purchase a good quality car battery.
  • Have your car battery checked by a professional. Some corrosion can't be seen.
  • Follow the oil change interval recommended in your owner's manual.
  • Have the battery tested at every oil change
  • Prepare your vehicle for winter by having preventative maintenance inspections and repairing any problems, including a necessary car battery replacement.
  • Inspect the battery cables, posts, and fasteners to ensure cables are in good shape and secured firmly to the battery.
  • Have your car's starting and charging systems inspected every six months.
  • Use a charger to maintain charge levels and keep your car battery in good condition.
For a car battery to function correctly, it must be in good condition internally, working together with the connections that feed the current to the vehicle's electrical components.

Auto Shop Advice on School Bus Safety!

Contrary to what many parents may believe, school buses are one of the safest forms of transportation on the road today. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proven that riding a bus to school is 13 times safer than riding in a passenger vehicle and 10 times safer than walking. It's a fact that more children are hurt outside the bus than inside, either hit by the bus or by motorists illegally passing a stopped bus. Many auto shops promote school bus safety this time of year. They believe the safety of children should be a top priority for all drivers.

If you are looking for Car Service Princeton MN than find dedicated Auto Repair Services Princeton MN Mechanic. Meet Expert technicians at Rum River Auto Shop Princeton MN.

To refresh the memory of drivers, an auto center offers these reminders of the school bus safety laws in all states:

    * On undivided roadways, traffic in both directions must stop when students are loading or unloading from a school bus. On a divided roadway, state laws may vary on what is required, but in all cases, traffic travelling the same direction behind the bus must stop.

    * The space where children are in the most danger of being hit is the 10 feet area surrounding the bus. Allow more than the minimum amount of space for children to safely load and unload.

    * Children can be unpredictable so stay alert when you come upon a school bus. They usually feel the safest in the place where they get on or off the bus. They can easily get distracted or not be aware of a dangerous situation.
    * Yellow flashing lights on the school bus alerts drivers that they are about to stop. A red flashing light and an extended arm signal indicates that the bus is stopping to unload or load children.

    * The laws in school zones are strict and fines can be hefty. Depending on your actual speed, a ticket received in a school zone can add 3 to 6 points on your driver's license, a charge for reckless driving, or even cause you to lose your license for up to six months.

    * 25 mph is the maximum speed limit if you see flashing lights or signals in a school zone. Otherwise, drivers may travel at the posted speed limit.

    * Passing a school bus on the right is illegal. It could have tragic consequences.

Auto Electrical Repair: What about the Starter and Alternator?

Does your vehicle have starting problems? The components of your car's electrical system include the battery, starter and alternator. These components work together to help start the engine and keep it running. When one part fails, it affects all three components, ending up with a car that won't start all. Just as we take care of regular physical exams for our human bodies, it's important to keep up-to-date with auto electrical repair so you don't get stranded on the side of the road with a dead battery due to a failing alternator.

If you are looking for Brake Repair Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Princeton MN shop . Also find Starters Princeton MN with our dedicated mechanic.

While the battery supplies the power to start your vehicle, the starter is really what gets the engine going. The alternator keeps the battery charged while the engine is running. Your car can start with a faulty alternator, but it won't keep running for long.

Some common signs your vehicles needs auto electrical repair:

    * No crank or slow crank when you turn the ignition key
    * An electrical system dashboard warning light (usually a battery) that remains on when driving
    * Loss of power in accessories or erratic electrical system functionality
    * Blown fuses

Enlist the help of a professional technician for auto electrical repair. They can help keep your vehicle running newer and longer by providing you with a number of electrical system maintenance and replacement options. Find out if your auto shop provided corrosion protection, cleaning of battery terminals, and quality replacement parts when original components fail.

Brake Repair: Stop, Please!

As most vehicle owners know, fully functioning brakes are vital to safety when driving. Your vehicle's braking system will work hundreds of times a day without any thought from you. It's a fact of life that brakes will wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until it's too late. Hopefully, most drivers know their vehicle well enough that they can tell if something isn't quite right.

If you are looking for Quality Oil Change Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Services Princeton MN shop. Also Find Brake Replacement Princeton MN to solve all your car problems.

What are the signs indicating that your brakes are wearing out and you need to schedule a brake repair? The big question is, will a simple brake service, such as turning the rotors, take care of the problem, or is a full brake repair or replacement necessary? If regular brake service is neglected, it can lead to increased repair costs, or worse, no brakes at all. Fortunately, paying attention to a few warning signs can keep you stopping when and where you want to, and not in the back of the car that's in front of you.

Signs of a pending brake repair:
  • You hear a high pitched squeal as the vehicle comes to a stop;
  • It takes a longer time and distance to stop than it used to
  • The brake pedal travels farther down to the floor than it did a few months ago;
  • The steering wheel wiggles in your hands when you come to a stop.
Your car should glide to a smooth stop, not grind to a halt. If they're not, you will probably be spending your hard-earned money on possible towing and repair bills. However, keeping up with regular service, paying attention to the signs of failing brakes, and choosing the right components for your vehicle will keep you stopping smoothly and safely right where you want to be.

Need expert brake repair? Contact our ASE-certified technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com/ for professional advice. Vehicle Maintenance: What are the True Facts?

What are the true facts about car maintenance? Most DIY'ers enjoy passing around information that could be costly and potentially dangerous if not properly researched. Rather than spend a few extra dollars for peace of mind and safety, many vehicle owners will try to take care of some car maintenance jobs themselves.

If you are looking for quality  Car Battery Princeton MN your search can be over now with our Rum River Auto Repair Princeton MN shop. Also find Car Maintenance Princeton MN to solve all your car problems.

Here's the truth about five common vehicle maintenance myths from the auto professionals:

Myth #1: You can visually see if tires have the correct air pressure.

Tires can lose up to one pound of pressure per month. Air pressure can be as low as much as 10 psi but yet not show any outward signs. Make sure to have the air pressure checked on a regular basis. Under-inflated tires wear out faster and your vehicle uses more gas as a result of the increased rolling resistance.

Myth #2: An air filter doesn't need to be changed unless it looks dirty.

Even if an air filter looks okay, it can be clogged. Filters trap dirt so small that it cannot be seen. If it is clogged, the engine can't breathe. Check your owner's manual for the vehicle maintenance schedule for replacing an air filter. It is easier and less expensive than an engine repair.

Myth #3: Brake fluid never has to be changed.

Brake fluid should be clear and transparent. It has the ability to absorb water from the air so that over time this moisture can cause damage to the brake system, and dangerously lower the boiling point of the brake fluid. Cloudy fluid means it's time for a change.

Myth #4: Bright green engine coolant is still effective.

The chemicals in engine coolant can become corrosive over time. Unseen and expensive damage can be occurring in the cooling system even though the fluid looks okay. To prevent overheated engines leading to expensive engine repairs, make sure the engine coolant is clean.

Myth #5: For premium performance, use premium gas.

Why pay more money for premium fuel unless your vehicle's engine was designed and built to use extra octane. Nowadays, there are fewer high performance cars and trucks that actually require premium fuel. Unless the owner's manual recommends premium fuel, just keep using regular.

A tip to remember: When in doubt about your vehicle's performance or components, consult a trustworthy auto mechanic for advice on vehicle maintenance.

Gearing up for that last summer road trip? For smooth driving ahead, make sure you have kept your vehicle maintenance up-to-date, including an engine repair service. This is the way to prevent a major engine rebuild down the road. The last thing you want to experience on your summer vacation is a breakdown, resulting in a costly engine repair.

If you are looking for quality Air Conditioner Repair Princeton MN than find our Auto Repair Services Princeton MN. Also find Engine Repair Princeton MN mechanic services to solve all your vehicle problems.

Many vehicle drivers ignore the fact that hot weather makes existing problems worse. So, for smooth summer traveling, follow this road map for vehicle maintenance:

#1 – Read your owner's manual - Know the recommended service schedules for your vehicle.

#2 - Engine Service – Replace dirty filters air, fuel, PCV, etc. Take care of any problems (such as hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) before they develop into bigger problems.

#3 – Oil Change – Change the oil and filter as specified in your manual. If the oil change interval will occur during your road trip, make sure to take care of it before you head down the road.

#4 - Tires – Make sure the tires have the correct amount of air pressure, that the tread is sufficient for driving on hot roads, and that the tires are rotated if necessary. Don't forget to check the spare, and be sure the jack is in the trunk.

#5 - Windshield Wipers – Replace old wiper blades and stock up on windshield washer solvent. Be prepared for those sudden summer rain storms.

#6 – Battery – Hot weather kills batteries, so have the charging power of your battery checked, corrosion cleaned from posts and cable connections, connections retightened, and the fluid level checked.

#7 – Lights – Make sure all lights (outside and inside) are working and that the lenses are clean.

#8 - Exhaust System – Inspect for exhaust leaks in the muffler, trunk and floorboards.

#9 – Cooling System – Check the level and condition of the coolant. Have a flush and refill as necessary. Also inspect the tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses.

#10 – Emergencies -- Carry a first-aid kit, blanket, flares, energy snacks, water, and a cell phone.

Oil Changes: A Basic Understanding!

The reasoning behind regular oil changes may sound complicated at first, but not really. A good understanding can also be an incentive for vehicle owners to be more intentional in making sure their vehicle has the necessary oil change at the right intervals.

If you are looking for Quality Oil Change Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Princeton MN shop. Also Find Car Maintenance Princeton MN to solve all your car problems.

What is the purpose of oil changes?

Regardless of what type of oil your vehicle uses (conventional, synthetic or synthetic blend), it all will eventually wear out and loose its effectiveness (actually, it's the additives that wear out more so than the oil itself). As your vehicle adds miles, its motor oil no longer has the same viscosity range it had when it was new, plus it accumulates a lot of gunk (moisture and acids fr
om combustion blow-by, soot, dirt and particles of metal from normal wear). If you ignore oil changes, the oil may start to gel or form engine-damaging varnish and sludge deposits. This sludge can damage engine bearings, piston rings, cylinder walls, valve guides and lifters.

The filter traps most of the solid contaminants, and the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system will siphon off most of the moisture and blow-by vapors. This takes place when the engine gets hot enough and runs long enough to boil out the contaminants. Even so, after several thousand miles of driving many of the essential additives that control viscosity, oxidation, wear and corrosion are seriously depleted. At this point, the oil begins to break down and provides much less lubrication and protection than when it was new.

Drivers, take note: You can't tell the condition of oil by its appearance alone. The color doesn't necessarily mean it's time for an oil change, as most oil turns dark brown or black after just a few hundred miles of use.

Simply stated, repeated and regular oil changes are necessary to prevent car engines from wearing out prematurely. It's money well spent to guarantee your vehicle's optimum performance for many, many more miles of use.

If you need a basic oil change, or a more complex automotive service, contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com/ for more information and to find our oil change coupons. Tire Repair: Keep Those Tires in the Round!

It is the middle of summer and your snow tires are just sitting in a corner of your garage, or possibly just outside covered with a tarp. However, in order to keep your extra sets of seasonal tires in good shape and ready for the next season, proper storage is important. Before "putting them on the shelf," make sure you have taken care of any tire repair that may be needed and inspect for uneven tread wear.

If you are looking for Quality Tire Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Center Princeton MN . Also find Radiator Repair Princeton MN with our dedicated mechanic.

 So that your tires will last longer and save you money in unnecessary tire repair, follow the guidelines below.

    * Store them indoors in a clean, cool and dark location and away from sources of heat, such as hot pipes or electric generators.
    * If you have to store your tires outdoors, raise them off the ground and use water-proof covering with holes to prevent moisture build-up.
    * Be sure the garage (or shed) floor is free from grease, gasoline or other substances that could deteriorate the rubber.
    * If storing a vehicle with the tires still on, use blocks to remove the load off of the tires and maintain the correct air pressure.
    * For tires with white sidewalls or lettering, face the whitewall or lettering together to avoid getting black rubber stains on the white.

When it's time to change out your tires for winter, schedule a tire repair to ensure the air pressure and tread is adequate for winter driving. Of course, be sure to follow the same guidelines above for taking care of the set you're taking off. You will be glad you took the extra time to take care of your tires!

Car Tune Up: Strong Returns on Engine Power!

For many drivers, their vehicle is the second largest investment they will ever make. As such, it is important to establish and follow a maintenance plan to protect that investment and to gain strong returns on the performance of your engine's power.

If you are looking for quality  Tune up Princeton MN than visit our rumriver Automotive Service Princeton MN. Also Find Reliable Tire Princeton MN for safe driving.

 Simply stated, a car tune up is the process of inspection, diagnosis, testing, and adjustment periodically to maintain peak engine performance or restore the engine to original operating efficiency. Even though a tune up in today's vehicles isn't the same as it was years ago, it should still be part of the plan to ensure you get the maximum reliability and safety from the vehicle you depend upon.

    * Yesterday's Tune Up – Yesterday's older cars required adjustments to the ignition timing and fuel mixture. A tune up for engines that use a distributor means replacing the distributor cap, distributor rotor and ignition wires as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Spark plugs may still need to be replaced on a regular basis as well.

    * Today's Tune Up – New cars run on computer controls that are not adjustable, so a tune up in today's cars will generally consist of replacing the fuel and air filters, new plugs and wires (unless it's coil-on-plug), possibly a fluid flush, cleaning the carbon out of the throttle body, and run a solvent through the fuel injectors. A new car doesn't really get a tune up, it gets "refreshed."

Remember: A tune up is an investment that pays dividends with improved fuel economy, longer engine life and cleaner air. Enlist the assistance of your local auto mechanic for a maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle and driving conditions.

Car Service: Is Your Driving Vision 20/20?

There are many small indispensable things in life that we tend not to appreciate until they're gone. The same goes for your vehicle. Have you had a car service lately to make sure all the various components of your vehicle, both big and small, are working efficiently? One small, but important element to remember are windshield wipers. The windows of your automobile are your window to the world, and that requires wipers that are doing their job, without squeaking or streaking.

If you are looking for Quality Brake Repair Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Services Princeton MN shop. Also find Car Service Princeton MN mechanic with us.

Windshield Wiper Maintenance --

Check the performance of your current wipers on a regular basis. Are they skipping or squeaking and leaving streaks on the windshield? Do they leave a film of moisture on the glass instead of wiping it clean and clear? If so, try cleaning the blades with a towel. If that doesn't clear up your vision, ask for help from your car repair technician to replace the wipers. All it takes is one of those heavy summer rainstorms to turn worn-out wipers into serious safety hazards. The rear wiper can be just as important, so don't forget to check it too.

Even if you live in a climate with little precipitation, windshield wipers can still deteriorate. Perform a car service periodically. Is the rubber deteriorating? Do you see cracks forming? Don't wait until you can no longer see through your windshield before replacing them.

Buying New Wipers --Wipers generally aren't very expensive, so the "better to be safe than sorry" approach shouldn't strain your budget. Here are three guidelines for the wiper-shopping process.

   1. Buy the entire assemblies, not just the blades themselves. Even though it is possible to keep your old assemblies and just put in the blades, do yourself a favor and replace with a fresh set.

   2. Buy the correct wiper specified for your vehicle. They come in different shapes and sizes, so consult your
owner's manual, or find a trustworthy car repair technician for expert advice and help in replacing the wipers.

   3. Don't skimp on quality. Generic-brand wipers are cheaper, but can wear out in as little as a month or two of consistent use. If your manufacturer recommends a particular brand, try it. Otherwise, ask your trusted car repair technician who knows your vehicle. Don't pay more in the long run with cheap wipers; pay now for a high-quality set and you'll reap the benefits down the road.

Transmission Repair: Does My Car Need a Transmission Flush?

Regular vehicle maintenance may include a transmission flush, similar to a basic oil change or replacing the coolant in your radiator. Regular transmission service, typically every 24,000 miles or at least every two years, can help you avoid more costly vehicle repairs down the road. Some manufacturers may recommend longer service intervals, up to between 50,000-100,000 miles. However, these longer intervals are a disadvantage, as minor problems may not be identified early on and they can turn into a major transmission repair.

If you are looking for Expert Alternators Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Princeton MN. Meet us for Transmission Repair Princeton MN to have safe driving.

What does "Transmission Fluid Change" mean?"

If you have regularly maintained your motor over the years, a transmission fluid change is generally adequate, replacing about 1/3 to 1/2 of the fluid. The condition of the fluid tells the transmission repair technician whether a basic service is adequate or whether a more extensive transmission repair is necessary.
What is a "Transmission Flush?"

For more extensive repair issues, you may need to consider a transmission flush, which is intended to replace nearly 100% of the fluid. A transmission flush requires a specialized machine that replaces the old fluid by pumping new fluid through the transmission's lube and cooler circuit. If the filter is accessible (in some vehicle it is not easily accessible), it should be replaced as well.

After performing a transmission flush service, the mechanic will make any necessary adjustments, and then the final step; a road-test to ensure your vehicle is performing efficiently.

Why are Alternators and Starters so Important?

Starting problems? Your car's starting and charging systems, consisting of three basic components, the alternator, starter, and battery help ensure a dependable vehicle whenever you drive your car and in all sorts of driving conditions. It's important to have these two systems checked regularly by a qualified auto mechanic so you don't find yourself stranded by the side of the road with a dead battery.

If you are looking for Engine Repair Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Services Princeton MN . Also find Starters Princeton MN Princeton MN with our dedicated mechanic.

 Here is a simple description of these three components:

Alternator – This is an old term for electric generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy producing alternating current. Alternators are mainly used for recharging batteries and to power electrical loads of vehicles.

Battery – The battery stores electrical energy.

Starter – The starter converts the energy stored in the battery into mechanical force to turn the engine for starting.

It takes teamwork!

These three components work together as the alternator produces electric current to replace what the starter used during start-up and to support electrical loads when the engine is running. An ignition module turns the low-voltage supply to the ignition coil on and off, and the coil produces the high voltage for the ignition system. This creates a spark at the spark plugs and ignites the air/fuel mixture in the engine. A belt transmits power from the front of the engine to the alternator's pulley, along with other accessories.
Causes of Wear --

    * Frequent engine on/off cycles
    * Driving habits
    * Weather conditions
    * Mileage
    * Vehicle age
    * Excessive electrical draws like in-vehicle entertainment systems

Symptoms of Wear --
    * Headlights and interior lights dim
    * "Check Engine" and/or battery light may come on
    * Accessories fail to operate

For questions about starters and alternators, contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com/ for more information. Keep Your Summer Fun Alive with a Quality Car Battery!

Warm weather is the time for major problems with your car battery. According to the Car Care Council, it is heat, not cold, that shortens battery life. Even though the average life of a car battery is three and a half years, excessive heat and overcharging are the two main reasons for shortened battery life. Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, causing damage to the internal structure. Or, a malfunctioning component in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator, can allow too high a charging rate. That can mean a slow death, resulting in the need for a car battery replacement sooner rather than later.

If you are looking for Car Battery Princeton MN Replacement than find Rum River Auto Repair Princeton MN shop.Get complete Car Maintenance Princeton MN  services by our dedicated mechanic.

Here are the most common causes of a car battery to fail:

    * Faulty Cable Connections - Cables from the battery posts deliver power to the car's starter. Electrical connections fail when the screws or bolts attaching these cables loosen, and your car probably won't start at all. Tightening these connection cables will alleviate this problem.

    * Corrosion Buildup - If the cables are tight, the next culprit is most likely corrosion. Corrosion is an acid by-product that accumulates around the posts. As corrosion builds up, the electrical connection consistently grows weaker and weaker until the car will not start. A simple cleaning of the posts will correct the problem.

    * Extended Inactivity - If your vehicle has sat idle for more than 2 weeks, the car battery's power slowly drains away because the alternator has not able to keep the battery charged up. Just remember to start an idle vehicle every week or so.

Avoid Car Battery Problems!
To get the most life out of a battery:

    * Be sure the electrical system is charging at the correct rate; overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging.

    * If your battery is the type that needs to be topped off, check it regularly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water when necessary.

    * At some point in time, a car battery replacement is inevitable. Always replace it with one that's rated at least as high as the one originally specified.

    * Keep the top of the battery clean. Dirt becomes a conductor, which drains battery power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on battery terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting current flow.

Proper care and maintenance of a car battery will ensure its long life. Consider these simple tips keep you on track for a fun and safe summer.

Vehicle Maintenance: 5 Rust-Prevention Tips!

Few problems can harm your car or truck's resale value like unsightly rust, so why not exercise good car maintenance to keep it safe from oxidation? The harsh environment we expose it to can create damage without preventative vehicle maintenance.

If you are looking for expert Alternators Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Princeton MN. Meet us for Vehicle Maintenance Princeton MN to have safe driving.

First, what is rust? Simply stated, iron oxide is a product of iron and oxygen when water is present. During the reaction process, the iron is consumed, resulting in rust and a small amount of hydrogen. Since your vehicle's body is made up of steel, an iron alloy, it's susceptible to rust. Car manufacturers realized the best way to protect metal from oxidation was with paint. This seals the material off from oxygen and moisture, thereby stopping the reaction.

5 Tips for Rust Prevention:

   1. Store Your Vehicle Indoors or Covered - Storing your car or truck in a garage is one of the best ways to protect it against rust. Or, if not possible, use a car cover. Over time, extreme changes in temperature and exposure to sun and precipitation will weaken the paint and eventually rust will take hold. Small scratches can become big problems.

   2. Keep It Clean – Wash your car at least every two weeks; once a week if it is wet from salt on the roads. As you drive, dirt collects in various nooks and crannies. Where dirt resides, moisture follows, and the muddy mess will eventually wear down the protective paint to bare metal. Keep the interior clean too, wiping up any spills which can start rust from the inside out.

   3. Touch Ups – Try driving further behind other vehicles to prevent nicks from pebbles they kick up. The trick to minimizing the damage is to repair serious paint chips while they're still small. That means getting an appropriate vial of touch up paint and tackling chips as quickly as you can.

   4. Get it Waxed -- Protecting your paint is wise preventative car maintenance. That means taking the time a couple of times a year to use a good protective wax. This will help to keep at least a portion of harmful UV rays away from the paint, preventing it from cracking and eventually failing. There are a variety of quick spray-on waxes available, but a standard liquid or paste may be a better choice.

   5. Choose Quality Repairs -- Do your best to get your vehicle repaired by reputable technicians following any accident or fender-bender. If you get the repair done right the first time, then there is no need to worry about.

Proper vehicle maintenance will keep your vehicle rust-free, preventing serious damage and maintaining its looks and value.

Engine Rebuild vs. Engine Repair: What is the difference?

Replacing an engine with a new one, a remanufactured one, or a rebuilt one can add years to a vehicle's life and save thousands of dollars over what it might cost to buy another vehicle. An engine rebuild is obviously a major engine repair that requires a sizable investment in a vehicle. For some older vehicles, the cost of an engine rebuild may be more than the vehicle is worth. Yet many owners will replace it anyway because they want to keep their current vehicle, or they may owe too much on it to trade it in.

If you are looking for Engine Repair Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Services Princeton MN . Also find Car Service Princeton MN with our dedicated mechanic.

A vehicle that has had regular service, such as oil and filter changes, changing the spark plugs, timing belt and coolant at specified intervals, etc., should last 100,000 to 150,000 miles or more. But sometimes an engine may just wear out prematurely. When this happens, a painful choice has to be made: spend whatever it takes for an engine repair, or a complete engine rebuild, or get rid of the vehicle and buy another. Either way it is going to require a sizable financial investment.

Replacing the engine on a vehicle that is more than 12 to 14 years old is usually not worth the cost, unless the vehicle is a classic, an antique or has special value. A replacement or engine rebuild makes the most economic sense on vehicles that are four to 12 years old, and are still in good condition.
Replace or Rebuild?

The first step in replacing an engine is to confirm that the old one is beyond fixing. Many internal problems can be repaired without having to completely overhaul the engine--provided the rest of it is still in relatively good condition.

Replacement options include a used engine from a salvage yard (typically the least expensive), a remanufactured one or a new "crate" engine from the original equipment manufacturer. Good used engines for many vehicles are hard to find, and the salvage yard warranty rarely covers installation labor. Probably the safest option is to replace the old engine with a new or remanufactured one that is backed by a performance warranty as well as an installation labor warranty.

Whatever you choose, an engine rebuild or engine repair, contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com/ for more information. Brake Service: Restore Your Grip with Brake Repair

For vehicle owners who know their vehicle, they will notice when something’s not quite right. For example, if the stopping distance of their vehicle is too long, it may be apparent that a brake service is needed to determine the cause. They understand that a vehicle’s braking system is its most critical safety item, but like most other components and systems, brakes deteriorate and fail. It is inevitable that a brake repair or even a replacement will be necessary.

If you are looking for Quality Brake Repair Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Repair Princeton MN . Also find Engine Repair Princeton MN mechanic with us.

 There are several factors that affect wear:

    * Driving habits
    * Operating conditions
    * Vehicle type
    * Quality of the brake lining material

Familiarize yourself with the warning signs below and schedule a brake service if you notice the braking system is not working as it should.

    * Noise when stepping on the brake pedal.

A little squeaking when the brakes are wet or when you drive first thing in the morning is normal until they warm up. But how long should these sounds persist? If you hear a consistent squeak or whistling every time you step on the pedal, schedule a brake service as soon as possible. If you continue driving, you may cause more extensive damage to your braking system, leading to a costly brake repair.

    * The car pulls to one side during braking.

This could be one of many things—uneven wear, a problem in the calipers or lines, or even an alignment or suspension issue. Stopping shouldn’t cause your car to pull to one side, whatever the reason. Schedule a brake service right away.

    * Pulsating pedal:

This can “sometimes” be normal behavior—Anti-Lock Braking systems will pulsate a little under hard braking. Under certain conditions, such as sudden temperature changes, the rotors can bend or warp, leading to weird pulsations while stopping. This is a problem that can be corrected fairly simply and inexpensively as part of a brake service.

    * A “mushy” pedal:

A mushy or spongy pedal could indicate air in the lines, which means a technician will need to “bleed” the system. It could also be a symptom of low fluid, and that’s a big, red alert. Seek help immediately. Don’t drive your car until the cause of the problem has been found.
