Radiator Repair: Relieve pressure with Radiator Service!

Do you feel the pressure building up? It’s time for a radiator service! The cooling system of a vehicle consists of several small, but important components; the radiator, fan, fan belt, hoses and clamps, thermostat, water pump, and coolant over-flow tank. This complex system is responsible for keeping the operating temperature of the engine at a consistent level. It’s vital that this system is maintained properly with regularly scheduled radiator service, whether you drive your car every day of the week, or just occasionally. A radiator service will prevent the build-up of rust and scale which interrupts the flow of coolant. Lack of servicing can lead to overheating, breakdowns and a premature, costly radiator repair.

If you are looking for quality Radiator Repair Princeton MN than find our dedicated Auto Repair Services Princeton MN shop. Our expert mechanic also provides Engine Rebuild Princeton MN services.

Some essential tasks that should be covered in a radiator service are:

    * Hoses and/or belts inspected every 15,000 miles; replaced (or adjusted) every 30,000 miles or as needed.
    * Radiator, water pump, core plugs, and hoses for leakage inspected and repaired every 15,000 miles or 12 months.
    * Pressure cap checked every 15,000 miles or 12 months; replace every 30,000 miles.
    * Cooling system drained, flushed and refilled every 30,000 or 60,000 miles.
    * Mineral deposits cleaned from the entire coolant system.
    * Old anti-freeze drained and refilled with new clean anti-freeze.
    * Fluid additives to optimize the performance of the coolant system by increasing the proper flow of coolant.
    * Coolant conditioner additive to renew gaskets and seals to prevent overheating.

Problems with a coolant system typically arise when regular radiator service is forgotten. When fluids aren't renewed as needed, heat created by the engine cannot be dissipated correctly. This will result in overheating, breakdowns, and possibly engine damage resulting in a necessary radiator repair. Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended service interval.

A dependable vehicle is not automatic. It requires attention, time, effort and financial investment. So take the pressure off by taking preventative measures and have a radiator repair before your problems get any bigger. Your vehicle will thank you by getting you where you need to go on schedule!

Need a Brake Replacement? Stop, Look and Listen to your Brakes!

Are you confident your vehicle will stop exactly where and when you want it to when you step on the brakes? It’s a fact that they work hundreds of times each week, stopping your vehicle in just the right time, often without any thought on your part. Can you depend on them to keep up this grueling pace without stopping for a brake replacement? A wise vehicle owner doesn’t wait for a problem, or an accident, before scheduling a needed brake repair.

If you are looking for quality Brake Replacement Princeton MN than find our Rumriver Auto Center Princeton MN shop. Meet us for Tire Princeton MN to have safe driving.

Behind the Scenes:

Stopping your vehicle seems as simple as stepping on the pedal. But it’s really more complex than that behind the scenes. A detailed balancing act is being performed in the brake system to help you stop safely and smoothly every time. If one of the components in this system becomes worn or damaged without realizing, the system will fail and you could possibly find yourself in a dangerous situation.

Warning Signs leading to Brake Replacement:

Fortunately you can usually hear and feel problems coming before they get too far along. Take a minute to stop, look, and listen to your brakes.

    * Stop! How does the level and quality of the fluid affect brakes? If it is dirty, it will create problems when it can no longer flow smoothly to the calipers. Clean, new fluid will not only help maintain and prolong the life of your entire vehicle, but will save you money by preventing a costly brake replacement down the road.

    * Look!If you see a warning light on your dash board, don’t put-off scheduling a brake repair for the entire system. Failing brakes are nothing to mess around with. Your family’s safety is at stake.

    * Listen!Hear that screeching, squealing sound when you come to a stop? This typically means that the pads are worn. This creates excess heat which will lead to serious damage to the rotors, most likely leading to a complete brake replacement. Schedule a brake repair sooner rather than later!

A Brake Repair service includes --
Resurfacing rotors to manufacturer specifications and lubricating properly is typically part of a complete brake repair service. If you see or hear any of the warning signs described above, take your vehicle into an auto service center as soon as possible. It’s the wise thing to do.

Feeling Low? Consider 3 Tire Repair Tips!

The last thing you want to see when you’re heading out the door to your vehicle are flat tires. Not only do you feel frustrated at the inconvenience of installing the spare, you are going to spend precious time getting the repair taken care of. If it’s a steel belted radial (which most are these days), it should be repaired immediately to minimize potential long term deterioration started by the puncture.

If you are looking for reliable Air Conditioner Repair Princeton MN than find Rum River Auto Repair Shop Princeton MN services. Find Reliable  Tires Princeton MN for safe driving.

While almost any sharp object left on the road can cause punctures, most are caused by small nails and screws (typically less than 1/4" in diameter). Guidelines allow a tire repair of punctures in a tread area of up to 1/4" in diameter. A tire repair of larger tread punctures and of punctures to the shoulder and sidewall areas is highly discouraged against.

Consider these three tips when needing a tire repair:

    * Evaluate the damage the object caused as it punctured the tire – Any repair attempted without removing it from the wheel is incorrect. Punctures in the tread area that looked repairable have revealed that the object that punctured had been long enough to cut the sidewall from the inside. Without dismounting the tire, the hidden damage would have been missed.

    * Reestablish an airtight seal of the innerliner -- Clean the puncture with a specially designed cutting drill that removes rust and sizes the injury properly to fit the rubber stem of the patch. Cemented in place, the stem will vulcanize with the tire to help prevent moisture from reaching the reinforcing cords from the outside.

    * Completely fill the path the object took through the tire – This will prevent moisture reaching the steel belts and/or the casing cords causing them to rust or deteriorate.

How do you know which procedures a tire repair technician uses? Ask them! Driving on improperly repaired tires is dangerous because it can cause further damage to the tires and/or allow their strength to deteriorate over time. An improperly repaired tire driven at high speeds may suddenly fail, causing loss of vehicle control. Additionally, the use of an innertube as a substitute for a proper repair generates additional heat and should not even be considered.

Vehicle Suspension: The ups and downs of it!

When you wonder what car suspension is all about, it’s quite simple. However, it depends upon what kind of suspension you desire for your vehicle; smooth-ride and graceful handling or sports car agility. Let’s take a look at the basics in order to learn what vehicle suspension is all about.

If you are looking for reliable Tires Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Auto Center Princeton MN shop. Meet our Vehicle Suspension Princeton MN to solve any of your vehicle problems.

In the beginning…

In the early days of the automobile, speeds were low and engine power was decidedly limited. Comfort was the main point of the ride, so that the passengers inside the vehicle were oblivious to the wheels bouncing up and down. By allowing the leaf springs that supported the weight of the body to flex freely, the harshness of early roads was softened substantially.

Time passed, and more hours were spent in the automobile…

Since coil springs rebound from bumps with almost the entire force of the original hit, motion sickness became a serious issue. The initial bump, although maybe gentle, went on and on. Through manufacturers’ trial and error, the solution to this bounciness rested in a mechanism to damp the bouncing motion. The design has evolved over the years, until we arrived at today's shock absorber, the major component in vehicle suspension.

The shock absorber is a universal concept, though the details of the design may vary. The shock absorber allows the car suspension to move freely over bumps, but damps excessive suspension motion by using hydraulic resistance, created by fluid friction inside the shock absorber. The heat caused by the friction in the shock absorber dissolves into thin air.

Today’s drivers…

The shock absorber, one of the vital components of good vehicle suspension, makes your ride more bearable and even enjoyable for longer periods of time. The race car driver became more excited too since the shock absorber could be adjusted and modified to create more stability in cornering and more drivability in endurance racing. Today, the casual automobile drivers and passengers, as well as race car drivers, can be seen smiling behind their wheels!

5 Symptoms of Auto Electrical Service Trouble identified!

Don’t stay on the side-lines. When a vehicle experiences any of the symptoms described below, it’s time for an auto electrical service. Failing vehicle starters and alternators are probably the most common culprit requiring an auto electrical service. Ignoring small problems will lead to more serious problems which may leave you stranded on the side of the road.

Need solution for problems associated with Auto Electrical Repair Princeton MN? Find Air Conditioner Service Princeton MN mechanic at our Rum River Auto Center Princeton MN shop.

   1. Warning Lights Indicators – These are sometimes referred to as “idiot lights.” But seriously, they have a purpose and should be taken seriously. Although they are frustrating when they appear, they inform us that our vehicle is not working properly and needs some attention.

   2. Failing Battery - A weak or failing battery is often the cause of electrical problems, especially in the freezing winter months when automobile lights are used for extended periods of time. Or, if the headlights or interior lights are left on for long periods of time when the car’s engine is not running. A jump-start typically takes care of the problem initially. A healthy battery is important in preventing future repairs to your vehicle’s starters and alternators so that your auto electrical system operates properly.

   3. Dimming or Flickering Lights – An electrical malfunction can cause your car’s headlights and interior lights to dim or flicker occasionally. Failing alternators cannot keep up with the continual current that is required to keep a battery fully charged.

   4. Sensory Indicators – If your vehicle begins to make odd noises that you’ve never heard before, or if you smell something burning, it’s most likely an over-heating electrical connection, electrical circuit or fuse malfunction. If you see white smoke or electrical sparks anywhere in your car, an electrical shortage or loss of connection is occurring.

   5. Interrupted Electrical Connections – When an electrical connection is broken, it can lead to a myriad of electrical malfunctions in your car. Sometimes simply reconnecting an on-line fuse or connection can remedy the problem very quickly.

If any of the above symptoms are apparent, you most likely are in need of an auto electrical service. Contact the ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com/ for expert advice on . Which one is it? Tire Balancing or Wheel Alignment?

Does your vehicle stray from one side of the road to the other, or does the steering wheel vibrate at high speeds? If so, you could be wondering whether your vehicle needs a wheel alignment or the tires balanced. Actually, the only thing wheel alignment and tire balancing have in common is that they both affect the forward motion and drivability of the vehicle. Proper car alignment is necessary for many reasons. In fact, after many types of vehicle repairs, a wheel alignment is necessary because they may interfere with the wheel alignment.

If you are looking for reliable Alternators Princeton MN than find Rum River Auto Repair Services Princeton MN  shop. Find Wheel Alignment Princeton MN to have safe driving.

There are several symptoms that signify your vehicle needs a car alignment. The most common symptoms are severe wear on the inside or outside edge of your tires and drifting problems when you let go of the steering wheel. This can be caused by several different things:

    * low tire pressure
    * worn out brakes
    * front end problems

A proper wheel alignment is necessary to keep your vehicle going straight down the road. It will not, however smooth out a vibrating or pulsating steering wheel as a result of unbalanced tires. This is an entirely different problem to be addressed when the tires are inspected.

Every automaker establishes a default setting for what their vehicle’s specific alignment should be. Unfortunately, these factory default settings will get off, due to the unevenness of the pavement, the crown of the highways, vehicle accidents, and daily driving in general.

Many auto mechanics suggest getting cars aligned every time tires are replaced. It may be needed sooner if they notice uneven wear or if the ball joints, tie rods or suspension has been replaced. One important thing to remember is; if the front end of your car is under repair, hold off on an alignment until the new parts are replaced. There is no need to pay for a second alignment.

For quality wheel alignment, contact our ASE-certified technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com/ for expert advice on good car care. What do you know about oil changes? Take this oil change quiz!

It’s back to school time for many people now that summer is over. With that thought in mind, here is an oil change quiz to test your knowledge about oil changes. Can you answer the questions without looking? Even though an oil change is so basic, it remains as one of the most important parts of preventative automobile service.
What determines how often to have an oil change?

If you are looking for quality Oil Change Coupons Princeton MN than find Rum River Auto Repair Services Princeton MN services. Find Heating Repair Princeton MN to have safe driving.

The type of driving determines the interval between oil changes, found in the vehicle owner’s manual. Today’s driving is generally considered as “severe” so the manual will usually recommended an oil change every 3,000 miles or 90 days, together with an oil filter replacement for optimum engine performance.

Does my driving qualify as “severe?”

    * Trips shorter than 10 miles?
    * Consistently driving in dust and sand
    * Unable to warm up due to cold weather starts
    * Idling for more than 5 minutes
    * Stop-and-go driving in traffic
    * Pulling trailers and heavy loads
    * Heavy duty driving, such as sustaining high-speeds in hot weather, or curvy mountainous roads.

What good is the Oil Filter?

The filter “sifts” and removes solid contaminants in the oil. This allows it to freely flow and keeps it clean as it enters the engine lubricating areas. Otherwise, a condition called “by-passing” may be created, when the oil and contaminants flow around the filter element due to a clogged filter. This could possibly cause damage to the engine’s moving parts and increase the production of sludge.
Are all filters the same size?

The answer is no! But you should know that the effectiveness of the filter is directly related to its size. Before the 1990’s, most filters in cars and light trucks held approximately a quart of oil. Due to the downsizing of the filter size, it now barely holds half a quart.

What do you mean by sludge formation?

Sludge is formed when the oil is not changed frequently enough. This lets contamination (blow-by, condensation, fuel, dust, metallic shavings, anti-freeze) mix, which then oxidizes and clogs the filter even more.

Tip to Remember: For a few minutes of your time and just a few dollars every three months, or 3,000 miles, you can keep your car on the road with confidence with regular oil changes.

Exhaust System: Do You Know What Your Muffler is Saying?

If you want to know what’s going on inside your vehicle’s engine, pay attention to the exhaust system. As the engine burns fuel and creates exhaust, lots of different things are happening. Unfortunately, burning oil, evaporating coolant and leaving unburned fuel in the exhaust are things that aren't supposed to happen. Maybe what seems to be engine trouble is just a worn out muffler, but it’s hard to know without an inspection.
There are a couple of ways to understand what’s happening in your vehicle’s exhaust system-- the color and smell of the emissions from the muffler.

If you are looking for Muffler Princeton MN or inspection for Exhaust system Princeton MN than find Rum River Automotive Auto repair services princeton MN to solve any of your vehicles problems.

If you notice…

  • Blue or Gray Smoke: If gray or blue smoke comes from the muffler when you start your car, it may seem to disappear after the car warms up, but in reality, it is just less noticeable. Grey smoke indicates that oil has gotten into the combustion chamber or on the cylinder head, indicating an oil leak. Even though this is easy to find, it can be expensive to fix. The best case scenario, however, is that your vehicle simply needs an oil change.

  • White Smoke or Water Vapor: You may see white smoke coming from the muffler when you start your car when it’s cold outside. However, if it’s still there after the car warms up, it could be coolant leaking into the combustion chamber, caused by a crack in the coolant pipe. Or, there may be a crack in the cylinder head or the exhaust port facility. These are serious problems and will usually require extensive work in the exhaust system.

  • Black Smoke: Black smoke may come from the muffler when you start your car and it may or may not disappear after the car warms up. The engine may be running rough or misfiring. Black smoke often signifies a more serious problem, an indication that your engine is burning oil. This could mean you have a blocked air filter, or your injection system is malfunctioning.

If your muffler reflects any of the exhaust system problems above, have it checked out by a certified auto mechanic as soon as possible. It’s true that a little prevention now can save a more costly repair down the road.

Car Tune Up: Please define tune up!

The words "tune-up" really only applies only to older vehicles on which you can perform the traditional service, such as spark plug replacement, ignition contact point replacement, dwell adjustment, ignition timing adjustment, carburetor idle, and mixture adjustment. The term “engine performance maintenance” is a more accurate term for most of today's cars. All modern vehicles are equipped with an electronic ignition and at least one on-board computer that automatically adjust items like the ignition timing, fuel mixture and idle speed. In fact, it's impossible to adjust these components yourself.

Simply stated, a car tune up is an orderly process of inspection, diagnosis, testing, and adjustment that is periodically necessary to maintain peak engine performance or restore the engine to original operating efficiency.

If you are looking for quality Car TUne UP Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River Car Axles Princeton MN shop. Meet our Mechanic Princeton MN to solve any of your vehicle problems.

On an electronic ignition system, the basic tune-up procedures are as follows:

  • Remove spark plugs
  • Test compression in each cylinder.
  • Clean and/or replace spark plugs and gap spark plugs to manufacturer’s specifications and install in engine.
  • If applicable, check the distributor cap and rotor for cracks and wear. Replace if necessary.
  • Use tachometer to set idle speed to specifications (if adjustable).
  • Use timing light to set initial timing (most electronic ignition systems do not require adjustments).
The car tune-up is a good opportunity to perform a general preventive maintenance check on everything in the engine compartment, as well as to look for failed, or about to fail, components such as loose or damaged wiring, leaking fuel lines, cracked coolant hoses, and frayed belts.

Auto Repair: Is your vehicle ready for summer?

Before you pack your car and head out on your summer road trip, make sure you are on schedule for all your auto repair services. A pre-trip inspection will help you avoid the inconvenience and potential safety hazards of breaking down miles away from home, resulting in emergency auto repairs. An inspection will determine how road-ready your vehicle is so you can take steps to have the problems fixed before your road trip, providing you with peace of mind and a safer journey.
If you are looking for quality tune up Princeton MN than find our Rum River auto repair Princeton MN shop. Find brake service Princeton MN to always have safe driving.
Auto technicians say the key to make sure your vehicle keeps running well today, and down the road, is routine car maintenance. Yet many drivers tend to stall when it comes to keeping up with some everyday auto repair basics. A recent survey by the Car Care Council found:
  • 38 percent of cars had low or dirty engine oil.
  • 54 percent had low tire pressure.
  • 28 percent had inadequate cooling protection.
  • 19 percent needed new belts.
  • 16 percent had dirty air filters.
  • 10 percent had low or contaminated brake fluid.
Your auto mechanic can help you develop a Service Schedule to keep track of regular vehicle maintenance. Most of the checks and services can be done at little or no cost. Best of all, they are quick and easy to do.

A pre-trip vehicle check should include:

  • Tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.
  • Inspection of the brake system
  • Make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.
  • Check filters and fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. Dirty air filters can waste gas and cause the engine to lose power.
  • Check the hoses and belts that can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system.
  • Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Underinflated tires reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy and uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
  • Check that the gas cap is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating.

Tire Repair: What if I’m stranded with flat tires?

What if I’m stranded on the side of the road with flat tires, and there is no auto shop close by? This can happen while you are driving on a desolate highway, or out for a Sunday drive. What can you do? If possible, you might be able to patch, or plug, the tire yourself. During your pre-trip check, ask your auto mechanic for professional advice about the proper type of tire repair.

If you are looking for reliable tires Princeton MN than find Rum River car repair Princeton MN shop. Meet our tire service Princeton MN mechanic to have safe driving.

Here is a tip to help you out of a sticky situation:

You may be able to “plug” the flat tire. This type of repair is effective and will hold until you are able to have a tire repair taken care professionally. You may not have any other option if you want to continue on your way.

Experts have lots of opinions on the best method of repairing tires. Some drivers have used plugs for years with great results and no safety issues. Others have reported that using a plug without a matching patch inside is dangerous. To be as safe as possible, seek the advice of a tire specialist. They can advise you on how to have the best possible tire repair if you have limited options on the side of a road.

It’s interesting to note that the National Highway Traffic Safety Association has stated that a plug is not considered a proper permanent tire repair. With this in mind, if you have tires with a patch or plug, it would be wise to have them checked by your mechanic for safe driving and to have them repaired properly, or even replaced.

The fact is, a proper tire repair will last forever. For just a few dollars and a few minutes, flat tires can be given a new lease on life, possibly using the combination of a plug and a patch.

A word of caution--never attempt to plug a sidewall! A sidewall is under different strains and pressures than the tread pattern that makes contact with the road. Plugging a sidewall can result in a blowout, and lead to a serious accident. If you are stranded in a desolate location with this type of a flat, then your best option is to phone for help or seek the assistance of a passing driver.

Need a Brake Replacement? 3 Failing Components Lead to Brake Repair!

As you're thinking about an up-coming road trip, are you confident in the stopping power of your car? Because brakes work hundreds of times each day without any apparent effort, they can become an afterthought. Vehicle owners will often forget to check their performance. Until at that crucial moment--are you and your family going to be able to stop in time? Then, how will you know if new pads, rotors, or some other form of brake replacement is required?

Give your brakes a break and have them regularly checked by a brake repair specialist.  This inspection typically involves removing all four tires and wheels to inspect the pads and rotors for wear.

If you are looking for brake replacement Princeton MN meet our dedicated mechanic Princeton MN at Rum River Automotive Shop. Find brake repair Princeton MN services with us to have safe driving.

3 components of the brake system that could fail --

Brake Pads -- The alloys used in pads and rotors are sometimes very specific. The wrong pads can mean significant damage to rotors and other vital parts. Make sure you only have installed the pads and other components that are specifically engineered for your specific vehicle.

Brake Rotors -- The pads are just half of the relationship–without properly serviced rotors, your car will not stop as it should. It may be necessary at some point in time to have every rotor resurfaced and lubricated properly to make sure the pads get the maximum durability. This brake service can make a major difference in your car’s braking performance.

Brake Fluid – This is another component that is often overlooked. The “quantity” is generally checked, but the “quality” is often overlooked. The fluid can become dirty and create problems if it’s not flowing smoothly to the calipers. By adding clean fresh fluid, the life span of your entire brake system will be extended, plus save you money on a costly brake repair or brake replacement in the future.

Remember: To head out on your long-awaited for summer vacation, you will gain peace of mind knowing that your vehicle will perform in the manner that is required to keep you and your family safe when you have it inspected and repaired as needed.

Transmission Repair: What in the world is a Transmission Flush?

What’s that grinding noise? Is your car shifting hard? When the transmission is having trouble, it’s a bad feeling. Transmission repair or replacement can be expensive. But with regular maintenance, transmission fluid flushes and service, you can avoid a catastrophic transmission repair and keep your car healthier for longer.

If you are looking for reliable tires Princeton MN find meet Rum River auto repair Princeton MN shop. Meet us for transmission repair Princeton MN to solve transmission problems.

Transmission service is different for almost every vehicle. The manufacturer has exact specifications about service schedules, fluid types and more.

The transmission is a complex arrangement of moving parts. Gears and sensors keep the energy transfer from the engine to the wheels smooth. But all this movement and friction creates serious heat. The fluid helps maintain safe and consistent temperatures and lubricates those moving parts. Clean fluid helps maintain the life of this important vehicle component.

One type of transmission repair is a full transmission flush. This should be done at intervals based on manufacturer recommended standards. It involves the complete removal of the old fluid and a cleaning of the system, changing any filters if there are any, and installing new, premium quality fluid.  This is critical. The fluid breaks down over time because of heat. A quality service could literally save you thousands in transmission repair in the future.

While maintenance is the key to longevity, being aware of any bangs, whines or groans, as well as odd smells, will help to head off problems at an early stage and avoid a major transmission repair.
Do you have more questions about a transmission flush, or are you looking for expert transmission repair? We will be glad to help you. Engine Rebuild: The Alternative to “New” Car Costs

If your car is experiencing major engine failure, purchasing a new one might sound great in theory but in these uncertain economic times, it might not be the right investment. Other options, such as a minor engine service, or a complete engine rebuild, may be a much better economic decision rather than purchasing an expensive new car that you can on quality oil change.

If you are looking for engine rebuild Princeton MN than find Rum River auto repairs Princeton MN shop. Also find us for discounted oil change coupons Princeton MN on quality oil change.

Smart shoppers and smart motorists make better decisions when they know all the options. Many consumers think that buying a new vehicle is the only solution when they experience serious engine trouble. In fact, installing a remanufactured/rebuilt engine in your vehicle will extend its life at a significantly lower engine service cost than purchasing a new one, saving you money in the long run.

An engine rebuild consists of completely disassembling, cleaning, machining and remanufacturing or rebuilding the engine from either your vehicle, or another one like yours. Unlike used or junk yard engines with an unknown performance and maintenance history, remanufactured/rebuilt ones are dependable, reliable and typically backed by warranty programs.

For about the cost of an average down payment on a new car or truck, you can have an engine rebuild. You can gain years of reliable service without monthly car payments and higher insurance rates.  Use good sense before you consider a new vehicle purchase and talk with a professional service technician to see if an engine rebuild is a wise and viable option for you.

Need quality engine service? We will be glad to help you, whether it’s for a minor engine repair, or a complete engine rebuild. Tips for Saving $$ on Fuel and Vehicle Maintenance!

With the current price of gas on the rise, you can control how much gas you use by following some simple and inexpensive vehicle maintenance. This probably sounds like music to your ears if you are like most vehicle owners. Most of us don’t have the option of driving less when gas prices rise, but by making sure your vehicle is getting maximum fuel economy, you can cancel out the increases.

If you are looking for automotive service Princeton MN find meet Rum River Automotive mechanic Princeton MN services. Meet us for vehicle maintenance Princeton MN to have safe driving.

It’s tempting to think you are saving money when you put off needed vehicle maintenance. However, neglecting routine car maintenance can end up costing a lot more. According to the Car Care Council, fuel consumption is directly related to car maintenance and driver behaviour. Both of these factors have a significant impact on how much you end up paying at the pump.

By following these good-sense driving and car maintenance tips, you will save $$ in gas, and put $$ back in your wallet.

  • Have regular car tune ups - improves gas mileage by an average of 4 percent.
  • Keep tires properly inflated - improves gas mileage by 3 percent.
  • Replace dirty or clogged air filters - improves gas mileage by as much as 14 percent.
  • Replace dirty spark plugs, which can reduce mileage by two miles per gallon.
  • Change oil regularly - gains another mile per gallon.
  • Check the gas cap. Damaged, loose or missing gas caps allow gas to vaporize into the air.
  • Observe the speed limit. Gas mileage decreases rapidly above 60 mph.
  • Avoid excessive idling - gets zero miles per gallon. A one or two minute warm-up is sufficient.
  • Avoid quick starts and stops. Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent in the city.
  • Consolidate trips. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much gas as one longer multi-purpose trip.
  • Don’t haul unnecessary items in the trunk. An extra 100 pounds in the trunk reduces fuel economy by 1 to 2 percent.
A Quick Tip to Remember: Keeping your vehicle running efficiently and modifying your driving behavior is the best way to improve your vehicle’s fuel economy and keep more money in your pocket.

Need a Car Battery Replacement? Don’t kill your summer fun with a dead Car Battery!

Spring has arrived and summer vacation planning is well on its way. Along with this, it’s time to make sure your vehicle is in tip-top mechanical shape. There is nothing worse than car problems to spoil a great summer vacation. A dead car battery has been the culprit many times. If neglected, your vehicle’s dependability is in question, including your long-awaited vacation. To add to your misery will be the inconvenience and the cost of a car battery replacement.
If you are looking for car battery Princeton MN replacement than find Rum River auto repairs Princeton MN services shop. Also find auto electrical service Princeton MN with us.

The following simple tips can assist you in keeping your car battery strong and reliable:

  • Preventative Measures – In order to prevent a premature car battery replacement, check terminals and cables. Loose or dirty cables are a common “no start” condition. Cable ends and terminals should be cleaned with a wire brush and light sand paper periodically to remove any corrosion build up. Spray coatings for terminals are helpful in reducing the formation of corrosion. Dirty or corroded terminals can severely reduce the lifespan of the car battery and alternator.

  • Periodic Check-ups - Have your auto mechanic check the load levels at every oil change interval if the car battery is over 2 years old. A weak battery that is not storing enough power will cause the alternator to work harder and possibly cause alternator failure.

  • Load Restrictions – This is how much of a “load” or drain can be placed on the electrical system before the stored electricity in the battery begins to discharge itself and needs to be recharged. It is not uncommon for batteries to go completely "flat" without ever giving a warning signal. Be careful to not overload your battery.
  • Car Battery Replacement – If a replacement is necessary, the new car battery should have the same dimensions, the same cable connections, and the same electrical capacity as the original. If you are in doubt, your mechanic can help you identify and install the proper battery for your vehicle.

Paying attention to these simple tips will get you on the right track for a fun and safe summer.

Oil Changes: 2 Facts to know about oil before your vehicle’s next Oil Change!

As you know, regular oil changes are important so that the moving parts of your vehicle’s engine are kept lubricated and prevent excessive engine wear and tear. Any auto mechanic will usually recommend an oil change on a regular basis to keep your vehicle functioning efficiently.
If you are looking for quality oil changes Princeton MN than find Rum River auto repair shop Princeton MN services. Find tire repair Princeton MN to have safe driving.

A couple of facts you may want to know about oil before your next oil change:

  • Grades: The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) grades each type of oil according to how thin or how thick it is. The higher the grade–-up to 70–-the higher the viscosity (or thickness). These grade numbers are referred to as the weight. You’ve probably heard the terms referring to the common weights of 5W-30, 10W-20 and 10W-30.
  • Viscosity: This is an important factor in determining which type of oil is right for your car. Most vehicles can use “multi-viscosity” which has passed the SAE specifications--thinner oil at lower temperatures, and thicker at higher temperatures. When it’s time for your next oil change, consider the range of temperatures and the time of year in which you are driving.

Here are the differences between the three main types:

  • Conventional: Organic and limited in its capabilities, and highly reactive to temperatures.
  • Synthetic: Gives better engine performance, more slippery, and has fewer imperfections in its chemical buildup. Synthetic can cost up to three times as much; but the interval between oil changes can be greater longer.
  • Synthetic blend: Combination of conventional and synthetic, is usually less expensive, but provides the same performance enhancement as a synthetic.
If you still have questions when it’s time for an oil change, it is best to follow your vehicle’s manufacturer’s recommendations. For the final say, consult your local auto mechanic--they’ll know what’s right for your vehicle.

Wheel Alignment: Why is it Important to have a proper Car Alignment?

Following the rough winter driving conditions, you may have noticed that your vehicle isn't moving down the road in a straight and true path. This compromises the safety of your passengers, as well as other motorists. If a vehicle no longer has the proper wheel alignment, its tires will wear out more quickly and potentially create some driving hazards. In order to prevent some of the hazards listed below, it's good to have some information about car alignment.

If you are looking for quality tires Princeton MN than find Rum River auto repairs Princeton MN services shop. Find wheel alignment Princeton MN to have safe driving.

Here are some of the hazards caused by improper car alignment:

  • Uneven tire wear and tear-- relative to each other and within each tire's own tread.
  • Rough and slightly torn appearance.
  • Shortened life span of tires, leading to premature replacement.
  • Poor driving traction, which affects ability to stop under all circumstances, especially in poor driving conditions, such as mud, snow or ice on the ground.
  • Poor handling.

If you are experiencing any of the conditions listed above, schedule a car alignment as soon as possible. The cost to ensure proper wheel alignment will be much less than the cost of replacing four tires that wore prematurely.

Tires get a number of ratings, including the uniform tire quality grading (UTQG) system ratings from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These ratings indicate the tread wear, traction and temperature capabilities. There is also manufacturers' information (such as tire type, width, aspect ratio, construction type, and rim diameter). All of these ratings are based on proper inflation and alignment. If your car is “out of alignment” and has worn tires, it is impossible to determine how much heat your tire can take, how much load your vehicle can carry, and how quickly your vehicle can come to a stop. As a result, with an improper wheel alignment, a driver could be literally driving blind regarding what his or her car can do.

Why is an Exhaust System and Muffler so important?

So that vehicle owners understand the importance of an exhaust system and the connected muffler, here is some basic information to explain the purpose of two main components, the Emissions Control System and the Catalytic Converter!

If you are looking for muffler Princeton MN or inspection for exhaust system Princeton MN than find Rum River Automotive mechanic Princeton MN to solve any of your vehicles problems.

Automotive emissions are controlled for three reasons: 1) to promote more complete combustion so that there are less by-products; 2) to reintroduce excessive hydrocarbons back into the engine for combustion; and 3) to provide an additional area for oxidation or combustion to occur (the catalytic converter).

Emissions Control System:

Because it became necessary to control the emissions from automobiles, today’s automobiles have become highly computerized. Gases, such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen are created during the combustion process and then are emitted into the atmosphere through the muffler and tail pipe. Hydrocarbons are also emitted as a result of vaporization of gasoline and from the crankcase of the automobile. Governmental regulations have set limits as to the amount of pollutants that can be emitted from an automobile. In order to meet these limits, automobile manufacturers have added certain pollution control devices and created a self-adjusting engine. As the computer systems in automobiles became more advanced, they were able to adjust ignition spark timing as well as operate the other emission controls installed on the vehicle. The computer is capable of monitoring and diagnosing itself, which assists mechanics in determining the proper repair when it fails.

Catalytic Converter:

The catalytic converter looks like a muffler and is located in the exhaust system in front of the muffler. Simply stated, hydrocarbons or carbon monoxide in the exhaust are converted to carbon dioxide and water as they pass over the catalyst. Heat is generated in the converter as it works to clean the exhaust. The dirtier it is, the harder the converter must work and the more heat that is generated. This is the main reason that our fuel is now unleaded, which is cleaner to burn and thereby reducing heat buildup in the catalytic converter.

Although an exhaust system is complex and generally causes vehicles to be less fuel efficient, they have been made proficient in controlling the poisonous pollutions and are vital to the quality and protection of our atmosphere, the air we breathe!

Tune Up: Is a Car Tune Up still necessary?

Are you concerned about the appropriate care of your vehicle? In today’s newer models of vehicles, advanced technology requires meeting emissions standards put in place since about 1996. Cars no longer have the same components that were included as part of the traditional car tune up.

If you are looking for quality tune up Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River automotive repair Princeton MN shop. Meet our mechanic Princeton MN to solve any of your vehicle problems.

In older model vehicles, a traditional car tune up consisted of…

  • Recalibrate the carburetor: The carburetor was responsible for creating an air and fuel mixture which was then pulled into the cylinders.
  • Reset or replace the points: Points were moving parts responsible for timing the spark to ignite the air and fuel mixture.
  • Replace worn out high voltage wires: Wires which ran from the distributor and points to the individual spark plugs.
  • Replaced spark plugs: or reset the gap if the spark plugs were not replaced.

The technology involved in a car tune up today involves…

  • Carburetors were replaced by fuel injection systems which use electronics to measure the fuel added to the intake.
  • Distributors and points were replaced by electronic ignition systems.
  • High voltage wires have been replaced by coil/plug ignition systems. This means that the high voltage is created at the spark plug. There are no high voltage wires that need to be replaced.
  • Most cars today have the spark plugs buried underneath the overhead cams. This makes them hard to replace. Accordingly, many cars and trucks use platinum tipped spark plugs which are good for 100,000 miles or longer.

Thanks to advances in technology, a regular "tune up," as we remember it is no longer required. However, it is still important to follow the recommended service intervals for your vehicle. Not only does this honor the vehicle’s warranty, but will also ensure that your car performs at optimum efficiency.

Tire Repair: Is the Air Pressure in Tires Important?

Automobile manufacturers are required to list the original air pressure of tires in the owner’s manual for your vehicle. If the inflated pressure has consistently varied from the manufacturer’s recommendation, it's likely that the wear and tear on your tires has been accelerated and you will need a tire repair sooner than expected! Your trusted auto mechanic can help you determine the remaining life expectancy of your tires.

If you are looking for quality tires Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River auto repair Princeton MN. Find us for tire repair Princeton MN to have safe driving.

There are usually three major problems leading to tire repair:

  • Under-inflation -- If your tires are under-inflated by only 6 psi it could lead to tire failure. Additionally, their tread life could be reduced by as much as 25%. Lower inflation pressure will allow the tire to deflect (bend) more as it rolls. This will build up internal heat, increase rolling resistance, and cause a reduction in fuel economy of up to 5%. You will also find a significant loss of steering precision and cornering stability.
  • Over-inflation -- If your tires are over-inflated by 6 psi, they can be easily damaged when running over pot holes or debris in the road. Higher inflation pressure cannot isolate road irregularities very well, causing the ride to feel stiff and harsh. However, higher inflation pressures usually provide improvement in steering response and cornering stability, but only up to a point. Avoid intentional over-inflation.
  • Time and Temperature -- Inflation pressures change due to time and temperature. Tires lose about 1 psi per month due to air escaping through the rubber as it stretches. Inflation pressures also fluctuate with changes in the outside air temperature at a rate of about 1 psi for every 10°F (plus or minus). So the inflation pressure you set correctly with an 80°F ambient temperature will be under inflated by 6 psi at 20°F. Improper inflation can cause irregular wear and void the manufacturer's warranty.

If the inflation pressure is repeatedly either higher or lower than recommended, you could be headed for a costly tire repair. Check the air pressure about once a week, preferably before the vehicle has been driven. Spending about two minutes a week will achieve the optimum performance from your tires and can prevent you being stranded on the side of the road.

Brake Replacement: Master Cylinder Troubleshooting for Brakes!

Are you feeling a bit uneasy when your auto mechanic recommends a brake replacement because the master cylinder on your brakes has failed? How can he tell? Or is he just trying to sell you an add-on job to the other repairs on your car. How do you know if he is doing his job correctly and looking after your best interests and your safety, rather than taking you for a ride with a brake replacement?

If you are looking for expert mechanic Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River auto center Princeton MN. Find us for vehicle suspension Princeton MN and vehicle maintenance.

Master Cylinder Troubleshooting Tips:

One sign that a master cylinder is starting to fail is that you will notice a soft or squishy feeling when you press down on the brake pedal. As constant pressure is maintained on the pedal (like at a stop light), it will begin to sink to the floor as the brake fluid leaks internally to the master cylinder. This is called "extended travel." You may have to "pump" the pedal to regain normal pressure and keep the car from moving forward as the brakes slowly release. The red warning dash light should come on to indicate low fluid, or excessive movement "travel."

The fluid level alone isn’t an indication of a good or bad master cylinder. Typically, the leak is internal, leaking past internal O-rings, so there is no obvious external sign that the master cylinder is "bad."

What is another sign of a possible faulty master cylinder? An external fluid leak could be possible, and would be visible to a mechanic during an under-hood inspection. The master cylinder usually has a plastic reservoir that holds the fluid, mounted with rubber grommets. The grommets allow for some movement caused by the pedal and fluid pressures. These grommets can develop a leak that can be seen with the naked eye.

Another sign of a possible faulty master cylinder is that the metal lines attached to the master cylinder can leak fluid at the threaded connections, or from the internal O-rings. When this happens, the fluid will drip down the power brake booster (the booster is what the master cylinder is bolted to). Brake fluid will dissolve paint rather quickly, so this kind of leak usually leaves a tell-tale sign of blistering, bubbled paint.

If you experience any of the symptoms explained above, check the following:

  • Check the fluid level and add more as needed;
  • Make sure the cap fits snug and is not leaking or shows obvious signs of past leakage;
  • Visually inspect for external fluid leaks;
  • Wipe away accumulated dirt and debris for ease of future inspections;
  • Have your brakes inspected if more than 1 or 2 ounces is needed to top off the reservoir;

Transmission Repair: 4 top signs of transmission trouble!

At some point in time, it’s inevitable that some form of transmission service will be required for your vehicle, whether it’s a manual or automatic. If you are having transmission problems, a trusted, well-qualified auto mechanic can determine the precise cause. Those strange noises coming from your vehicle may be a sign that a transmission repair will be required sooner rather than later.

If you are looking for transmission service Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River auto repair services Princeton MN shop. Also find automotive repair Princeton MN with our dedicated mechanic.

4 signs of trouble:

  1. Leaking Fluid. Without the proper quantity of transmission fluid, the transmission pump and other components can quickly begin to wear out. Making sure that the pump and filter are working properly is part of the transmission service needed to maintain the life of a vehicle. Just like oil, transmission fluid and filters need to be replaced periodically to keep a car’s motor running smoothly and at optimal efficiency.
  2. Check Engine Light. The check engine light is an early indicator that something is starting to go wrong with your transmission. In today’s newer cars, there are sensors throughout the engine that pick-up irregularities and notify the computer that there's something wrong in a particular area. These sensors can pick up vibrations and early problems you may not even be able to feel or see.
  3. Grinding, Shaking, Whining, Clunking, Buzzing. With a manual transmission, a common sign of trouble is a grinding sound or feeling when you shift into a new gear. Sounds will usually be abrupt and mechanical sounding. In automatics, you may hear a whining, or buzzing sound. Most likely, you'll feel the car shimmy into each gear rather than the typical, almost unnoticeable shifts, or you will feel it make a jarring transition into the next gear. If you notice anything other than a smooth transition between gears, a transmission repair may consist of a simple adjustment.
  4. Lack of Response. Transmissions are designed to go into the correct gear every time, with no hesitation. With a manual, you may notice after shifting that the car's engine will rev up, but the car won't be moving as quickly as the engine is running. In this case, a worn out clutch or more serious problem may be occurring. The stick shift could possibly pop out of gear and back into neutral if the shift linkage is out of adjustment. Automatics can have the same lack-of-response problem, but will usually manifest the issue while engaging the "Park" or "Drive" selection. If your car hesitates to go into gear, then it's highly probably a transmission repair is in your future.

Engine Service: 3 Engine Failures Requiring an Engine Rebuild

The engine is the heart of your car, pumping air and fuel through its system. Its basic purpose is to convert air and fuel into rotary motion to turn the wheels of the car. If the air and fuel is blocked and can’t be converted into motion, an engine repair will be necessary. It’s wise to have your vehicle inspected with an engine service by a trained auto mechanic on a regular basis to prevent a major engine rebuild down the road.

If you are looking for engine service Princeton MN your search can be over with our Rum River auto repair Princeton MN. Also find automotive service Princeton MN with our dedicated mechanic.

3 components of an engine commonly prone to failure, resulting in an engine rebuild:

  • Valve train: The valve train consists of valves, rocker arms, pushrods, lifters, and camshaft. Its job is to let air and fuel in and out of the engine at the proper time. The timing is controlled by the camshaft, which is synchronized to the crankshaft by a chain or belt.
  • What wears out? If your car smokes grayish/white smoke only when you start it up, it may have leaking valve seals. When they wear out or crack, oil can seep into the combustion chamber and collect there until you start your car.
  • Pistons: Most motors have 4, 6, or 8 pistons which move up and down in the cylinders. The pistons have rings that keep the oil free of fuel and air and keep it from entering the combustion chamber.
  • What wears out? The rings wear out, allowing fuel and air to enter the oil and dilute it. This reduces its ability to lubricate your engine, resulting in premature wear. Worn out rings also allows oil from the crankcase to enter the combustion chambers, where it burns, indicated by a grayish/white smoke coming from the tailpipe.
  • Crankshaft: The crankshaft is connected to the pistons by a connecting rod. As the piston moves up and down in the cylinder, it rotates the crankshaft and converts the straight line motion into rotary motion. The crankshaft rides on bearings, which support the crankshaft and rods, which connects the pistons to the crankshaft.
  • What wears out? These bearings eventually wear down, and you may start hearing a loud knocking noise. This problem may lead to a costly engine repair, having to remove the crankshaft and either machining the surface where the bearings ride, or replacing the entire crankshaft.
