Advice from an Auto Shop for Safe Winter Driving!

Tires Princeton MN

Don’t get stranded on a snowy or icy road, unable to travel to your holiday destination due to poor tires.  Check out your tires before heading down the road to make sure you are driving as safely as possible.  Many drivers ask, "Do I need winter tires or are my all season tires sufficient?"  To understand which tires would best suit your winter driving, you must understand the differences in winter tires vs. all season tires.

If you are looking for quality Tires Princeton MN than find our dedicated Automotive Service Princeton MN shop. Also find Car Alignment Princeton MN replacement to have safe driving.
  • All Season Tires
Many vehicles are fitted with all season tires when they leave the factory. They are built to provide a relatively quiet ride, good tread life and fuel economy.  They provide versatile performance and are designed to perform in a variety of conditions including wet roads and light winter driving. Even though all season tires are designed to provide good performance in many conditions, they tend to compromise between the summer and winter performance capabilities. All season tires won't provide the same amount of extreme grip and sharp handling of a summer tire, and they are not designed to handle extreme winter conditions like trekking through snow or driving on ice.  All season tires are a great option for drivers who live in moderate climates and do not encounter extreme cold, ice and snow in the winter months.
  • Winter & Snow Tires
From heavy snowfall to black ice, winter roads are unpredictable. The combination of cold temperatures, ice, and snow can be best met by winter tires, specially designed to perform in winter conditions.  There are specific features that make winter tires unique:
  • Tread rubber – The rubber compound remains more flexible in cold temperatures so that the tire grips the road better.
  • Tread depth and patterns – The deeper tread reduces snow buildup and provides better traction, and the unique tread patterns are designed to channel snow and slush, and expel water.
  • Biting edges -- Winter tires feature biting edges and high sipe densities (thousands of tiny slits in the tread that provide traction on ice).
Having the right tire matters!  The solution to the winter tires vs. all season tires question will depend on where you live and the conditions in which you drive.  If you only see a few snow flurries each year, all season tires will be fine. But if icy roads are a constant issue, winter tires are an essential safety measure that could save your life.

Auto Repair Shop Princeton MN

As most vehicle owners already know, all auto repair shops are not alike!   An auto repair shop (it may also be referred to as a garage) is where varying types of vehicles are repaired by auto repair technicians.  Some shops may specialize in only certain types of vehicles, or specific types of repair or services.  Take time to find the right auto repair shop before you need one!  For the average driver, a full-service auto repair shop that offers varying forms of repair may be your best choice!

Auto repair shops can be divided into several categories, such as:

  • Specialty shop – Specialty shops deal in only a certain component or system, such as brakes, mufflers and exhaust, transmissions, tires, electrical, air conditioners, glass repairs and installation, wheel alignment, or specific brands of vehicles. There are also shops that specialize in vehicle modifications and customization.  This type of shop may have a facility in various locations for specific jobs or vehicles, and technicians and mechanics with varying certifications.
  • Auto parts store – These stores sell automotive parts to the general public, and some may also maintain a service center.
  • Online auto repair shop – These online shops provide doorstep repair services and home delivery of new and used auto parts, generally not widely available in the market.

Advice from an Auto Shop for Safe Winter Driving!

Auto Center Princeton MN

As you head out the door on a cold winter day, you certainly want a reliable vehicle, whether you are just commuting to work or school, or headed out for some fun in the snow!  Don’t take any unnecessary chances of a roadside emergency and find yourself looking for an auto shop for an urgent repair.  Be sure to schedule a standard inspection of the various systems of your vehicle to determine if there are any potential problem areas that may appear down the road.

If you are looking for quality Chassis Princeton MN than find our dedicated Auto Center Princeton MN shop. Also meet our Air Conditioner Service Princeton MN mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

Consider the following advice from professional auto shop technicians:
  1. Stay on track with maintenance services: Check all the fluids (oil, brake, transmission, etc.), and change or top-off as necessary.  Spend a little extra for higher-quality filters for smoother performance.  Check the braking system, radiator hoses, transmission, battery charge, wiper blades, and all lights (both exterior and interior), and make sure everything is functioning properly.  Replace or repair as necessary.
  1. Check the tires:  Make sure all your tires have the proper inflation pressure.  Inspect them for abnormal wear and if necessary, have them rotated.  You may need to purchase new tires, possibly snow tires, if the tread is too shallow.  Make sure the spare is in good condition too.
  1. Clean out your car:  A clean car makes for more comfortable driving.  All-weather floor mats will protect your carpets and are easy to clean.  Make sure your windows are clean so nothing is obstructing your view.  Remove unnecessary items from the trunk and backseat to increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.
  1. Antifreeze: Make sure the ratio of anti-freeze is adequate for freezing temperatures.
  1. Emergency Supplies:  Make sure an emergency kit is left in the trunk.  This should consist of blankets, flares, jumper cables, flashlight, snacks, and water.
Even with all this preparation, an auto shop can’t guarantee that the unexpected won’t happen.  But, if you follow the advice above and take care of routine maintenance tasks, not only will your gas mileage and driving performance be increased, but you will gain peace of mind for a stress-free drive!

Radiator Service: Get Ready for Winter

Radiator Service Princeton MN

Did you know that your vehicle’s cooling system not only protects the engine from summer’s hot temperatures, but also from winter’s freezing weather? Make sure your engine is adequately protected with a properly functioning cooling system. Regular radiator service will help prevent untimely engine problems (such as overheating). Avoid an emergency radiator repair and keep the cooling system running at peak efficiency during the cold days of winter.

If you are looking for Radiator Service Princeton MN Replacement than find Rum River Auto caring with best Heating Repair Princeton MN services. Also find New Tires Princeton MN to have safe driving.

Here are a few tips to prepare your vehicle for winter:
  • Check Fluid Levels –. Make sure that the level of coolant in the radiator tank is correct, as well as the reserve or overflow tank. Your radiator repair technician will know the right mixture of antifreeze coolant to add. For protection against below-zero temperatures, you will want at least a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.
  • Drain and Flush -- Over time, antifreeze becomes acidic and loses its effectiveness. Dirt and contaminants build up, restricting the flow of the antifreeze/coolant. Ask a professional radiator service technician to advise you as to when you should drain the radiator and refill with fresh coolant. The entire system may need to be flushed before changing the coolant.
  • Check Caps -- Check the radiator cap and water outlet cap for cracks or other damage and replace as needed. It may be smart to replace the caps whenever you drain or flush the radiator system.
  • Check Hoses -- Frequently inspect all of the hoses and tubes that lead to the water pump, thermostat and overflow tank for cracks or cuts that may result in antifreeze leaks. Because hoses become dry and brittle, a radiator repair technician may advise to replace them every three or four years to prevent bursting.
  • Check the Tanks -- Visually inspect the radiator and overflow tanks every few months. It is easier to repair small pinholes or punctures before they become larger cracks.
Remember: Scheduling a radiator service before winter arrives is pretty cheap insurance to protect your vehicle!

Looking for affordable radiator repair? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389- 3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information about radiator service. Automotive Service: Like the Color of Green?

Automotive Service Princeton MN

Not only will keeping up with regular automotive service keep the green in your wallet, but it also helps save our earth’s natural resources and protects our environment. By spending relatively little up front on preventative automotive service, you can keep the green in your wallet and our environment by preventing an expensive and costly automotive repair.

If you are looking for quality Auto Electrical Repair Princeton MN than find our dedicated Automotive Service Princeton MN shop. Also meet our Car Shocks Princeton MN mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

The automotive service tips below will help you keep your green:

Follow the Correct Automotive Service Intervals. During an automotive service, your auto technician will check the performance of your engine, check the tread and air pressure in your tires, replace a dirty air filter, perform a quality oil change, and check the gas cap for leaks. Your vehicle will operate cleaner with less toxic emissions, and you will save money with increased fuel efficiency.

Use a Rebuilt or Remanufactured Engine. It can be economically smart to consider a rebuilt or remanufactured engine rather than just junking your vehicle. It will give your old vehicle new life with greater fuel efficiency for about the cost of an average down payment on a new car.

Proper Recycling and Disposal. Help protect our earth’s resources and keep our environment clean by conscientiously recycling and properly disposing of used motor oil, tires, batteries, and other parts and fluids.

Extending the Life of Your Old Vehicle. When vehicle owners experience serious engine trouble, they wonder whether it’s time to purchase a new vehicle. However, they can extend the life-span of their old vehicle by having routine automotive service performed and by not neglecting a necessary automotive repair.

Remember: You can avoid monthly car payments and higher insurance rates by providing your car with a little TLC—quality automotive service!

Have questions about a needed automotive repair? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for information about automotive service. Wheel Alignment: Stay In Control!

Car Alignment Princeton MN

Do you feel like you’re losing control of your vehicle as you head down the road? If your car needs a wheel alignment, it could be the cause of an accident! The correct wheel alignment affects the ride and handling of your vehicle. Your car should track straight and true on a level road, unless there are other issues causing steering problems.

If you are looking for Car Alignment Princeton MN than find our dedicated Tune Up Princeton MN Services shop. Also find Radiator Repair Princeton MN to have safe driving.

A car alignment consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are perpendicular to the ground and parallel to each other. A correct wheel alignment helps to minimize excessive wear and tear on your tires, saving you money in the long run with longer- lasting tires. If your car has a mind of its own (swerving all over the road), ask your car alignment technician to check for a lost wheel alignment.

A car alignment service should typically include:

  • A test drive at the start of the alignment service,
  • The front end and steering linkage checked for excessive wear,
  • The tires checked for excessive camber wear (caused by the tires making only partial contact with the road). All four tires should have even wear patterns.
  • Checking other components that could cause steering problems, such as poor tires, failing brakes, or faulty power steering, and
  • A test drive at the end of the alignment service.
Tip to Remember: Most drivers know their vehicle well enough to recognize a wheel alignment problem. If you are experiencing steering problems, schedule an inspection and repair with a car alignment technician as soon as possible to prevent further possible damage to other components of your vehicle.

Wondering about a needed wheel alignment? Our professionals can help keep you on track. Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information about a car alignment problem. Need a Brake Replacement? Diagnosing a Bad Caliper!

Brakes Princeton MN

If you find you are sliding to a stop, or your brakes are making strange noises when you step on the pedal, it may be time for a brake replacement.  There are several issues that could lead to a brake replacement, such as worn out pads or drums, a failing master cylinder, brake hose, or a bad caliper.

If you are looking for Car Battery Princeton MN than find our dedicated Automotive Service Princeton MN Services shop. Also find Brakes Princeton MN to have safe driving.

How can your auto mechanic tell if the caliper is bad?  One of the first places to look to diagnose brake problems is the pad wear.  If the brakes on one side of the vehicle are worn to the metal and the other side still has about 90% of its friction material left, you more than likely have a bad caliper.  This is caused by issues such as:
  • The calipers don’t always release, causing the brake pads to wear prematurely.
  • The piston may freeze and the brakes won't apply (which decreases the wear as the brakes aren’t applied).
  • The caliper slide pins may stick. Check these out first before totaling replacing the caliper. They may simply need the proper lubricant.
  • If the caliper piston won’t compress with the bleeder valve open, the caliper more than likely needs to be replaced.
Noteworthy Tip: Make sure your brakes are fully operational so that you are driving--or stopping--as the case may be, as safe as possible.  Have them inspected by a brake replacement specialist.

Need professional advice about brakes? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information about brake replacement.  Since 1997, our auto shop has served vehicle owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca and Zimmerman, MN.

Save Money with Routine Vehicle Maintenance.

Vehicle Maintenance Princeton MN

Many vehicle owners are interested in saving money. There are some simple ways to stretch your dollar at the pump and also protect the environment. Taking care of routine vehicle maintenance is one of those ways. Some drivers don’t realize that fuel efficiency is directly related to car maintenance, whether it’s good or bad.

If you are looking for quality Tire Repair Princeton MN than find our dedicated Vehicle Maintenance Princeton MN shop. Also meet our Air Conditioner Repair Princeton MN mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

6 Vehicle Maintenance Tips to help you save money:

  • Regular Tune-Ups: Regular tune ups can improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent.
  • Correct Tire Pressure: Keeping the correct air pressure in your tires can improve gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent.
  • The Right Motor Oil: Using the grade of motor oil recommended by the manufacturer can improve gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent
  • Change the Air Filter: Replacing a clogged air filter can improve fuel economy, performance, and acceleration.
  • Tighten the Gas Cap: A damaged, loose or missing gas cap allow gass to vaporize into the air.
  • Fix what’s wrong: Addressing a serious maintenance problem, like a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve mileage by as much as 40 percent.

There are several other ways that drivers can increase fuel efficiency (thereby saving money) in their vehicle:

  • Modify driving habits (observe the speed limit and avoid quick stops and starts),
  • Consolidate trips,
  • Avoid excessive idling, and
  • Remove unnecessary items from the trunk.

Is it time for an Engine Rebuild?

If you’re starting to hear strange noises coming from your engine, head over to your auto shop and ask for professional engine repair assistance. If you let an engine problem go on to long without taking care of it, you may be looking at more than a simple engine repair—an engine rebuild!

If you are looking for quality Engine Repair Princeton MN than find our dedicated Automotive Service Princeton MN shop. Also meet our Car Suspension Princeton MN mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

There are a variety of reasons that engine are rebuilt:

  • Worn out engine bearings—worn bearings produce a loud knocking noise and eventually cause engine failure. The moving parts of the engine (such and the crankshaft, rods and pistons) are mounted on bearings that allow them to move freely. These bearings are lubricated by engine oil and are built to last many thousands of miles.  They do wear down after time, accelerated exponentially when a vehicle is poorly maintained, runs low oil levels, or the oil change schedule isn't properly followed.
  • Worn out piston rings—piston rings seal in the expanding gasses created by the burning of gasoline within the engine.  As the rings wear, they no longer seal the cylinders properly.  This results in “blow-by,” which is when crankcase oil escapes past worn rings and burns with the fuel mixture in the cylinder.

What are the symptoms that an engine rebuild is needed?

  • Excessive oil consumption
  • Excessive white smoke in the exhaust, especially when the engine is cold.
  • Metal shavings in the engine oil (a common sign of dangerously worn bearings)
  • Knocking or chattering sounds from the engine bearings.

What is an Engine Rebuild?

First, the "short block" or lower half of the engine is removed, disassembled and cleaned so that the condition of the block can be properly assessed. Depending on the condition of the internal parts, the rings, bearings and sometimes the pistons are replaced. The internal surfaces of the cylinders are also reconditioned to ensure that the new piston rings can form a proper seal with the cylinder walls. Finally, the engine is reassembled and installed back into the vehicle.  The cylinder head may also be reconditioned at the same time.

Note: A rebuild can be very expensive. A cheaper option might be swapping in a lower-mileage engine or an engine that is in better condition.

Want Healthy Brakes, Schedule a Brake Service by the Professionals!

Healthy brakes are important for the safety of you and your passengers. Thus, regular brake service should not be treated lightly. Make sure your vehicle can come to a complete and precise stop when necessary.  You want to drive with confidence knowing that your vehicle is operating as safe as possible with fully functioning brakes.

If you are looking for Brakes Princeton MN than find our dedicated Auto Repair Services Princeton MN Services shop. Also find Wheel Alignment Princeton MN mechanic services to solve all your vehicle problems.

If you are experiencing any of the problems described below, it is a good indication that you need to schedule a brake service as soon possible:

  • The brake pedal feels “spongy” or presses farther down to the floor than usual.
  • Your vehicle pulls to the right or left when you brake.
  • Unusual noises (squealing) or vibrations occur during braking,
The most common brake repair job is a brake pad replacement.  Because the pads rub on the disk when stopping a vehicle, worn pads should be the first thing to check if you are experiencing braking problems. If the pads are worn thin or are cracked from heat, a full inspection of the braking system may be recommended by your auto mechanic.  Brake pads are just one of several possible problems, so be sure to have all the other components of the brake system checked out.

Be sure to choose a trustworthy auto shop to take care of your brakes. Be aware of brake service specials at an unknown auto shop. The cheapest price is not always the best price in the long run.
A word to the wise: Drive with confidence knowing that you are protecting yourself, your passengers, and other motorists with fully functioning brakes.

Need professional advice about brakes? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information about brake service.  Since 1997, our auto shop has served vehicle owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca and Zimmerman, MN.

Exhaust System: Got a Noisy Muffler?

Whether or not a vehicle’s exhaust system is operating properly is usually the last thing on people’s minds as they start out on their summer road trip. That is until they face the stares of other motorists as they pull in to a gas pump with a noisy muffler. Some drivers don’t understand that the work of the exhaust system does more than keep your car quiet. Don’t just turn up the radio to drown out a loud muffler.

If you are looking for quality Exhaust Systems Princeton MN than find our dedicated Car Service Princeton MN shop. Also meet our Starters Princeton MN mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

Do you know the four primary functions of the exhaust system? They are:

  • Route the waste gases away from the passenger cabin,
  • Help the engine run properly,
  • Maintain optimum fuel efficiency, and
  • Reduce the amount of polluting emissions into the environment.

Watch out for these signs of problems:

  • Catalytic converter – A failing catalytic converter may sound like someone shaking a box of rocks when your vehicle is idling when parked or stopped in traffic. Or, if it has been stolen, you'll immediately notice a loud sound and altered vehicle performance upon startup. The catalytic converter is one of the highest priced exhaust system parts and may be prone to theft by scrap metal thieves.
  • Exhaust leak – An exhaust leak can be caused by road conditions and rust, as well as just normal wear and tear. Because the muffler is mounted on the underside of a vehicle, it is exposed to a lot of road conditions that can cause it to break down over time.
  • Rust -- The water vapor produced by the catalytic convertor can also be problematic. If you only take your vehicle for short trips, the water vapor produced does not have a chance to be expelled. It condenses back into water, resulting in rust. ISulfer, another by-product of engine emissions, mixes with water left in the exhaust system, can form a corrosive acid that will eat away at the exhaust system.
Note to Remember: Delaying a needed repair to the exhaust system or muffler can be costly. Continuing to drive with an exhaust leak or bad catalytic converter can damage other things in your vehicle's operating systemy.

Need an inspection of the exhaust system for a noisy muffler?  Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information.  Rum River offers quality auto repair and detailing services.  Since 1997, our auto shop has served vehicle owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN and Zimmerman, MN.

Air Conditioner Service: Keep Your Cool!

Your cooling system works overtime during the long hot days of summer. The last thing you need is a malfunctioning air conditioning (A/C) system. Make sure it is operating at peak performance before you head out on your summer road trip. A couple of weeks before your trip, schedule an air conditioner service so that you can reach your destination comfortably. Keep your cool by having a necessary air conditioner repair as soon as possible, even if it’s for that short commute to work, or just taking your kids for a picnic in the park.

If you are looking for dedicated Air Conditioner Service Princeton MN your search can be over now with our Rum River Brakes Princeton MN Shop. Also find our quality Oil Changes Princeton MN for your car safety.

A thorough inspection of your vehicle’s A/C should be performed annually so that you can keep your cool when temperatures soar. It is important to always have the A/C system properly maintained to keep it in tip-top shape and to avoid a costly air conditioner repair down the road. A vehicle’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning system (HVAC) keeps the interior cabin comfortable in any season by providing the right temperature and humidity level.

A typical air conditioner service consists of:

  • A service technician checks pressures to test operation, refrigerant charge and outlet temperatures.
  • If the refrigerant is too low, a leak test is performed to find the source of the leak. Leaking refrigerant is also damaging the ozone layer.
  • Refrigerant may be added if necessary to “top off” the system. Your mechanic should know your state regulations, as some states do not allow “topping off.”
  • A technician may also check for evidence of refrigerant cross-contamination, which is the mixing of refrigerants.
  • An air conditioner service should also include a check of the compressor’s drive belt and tension.
Remember: Check the cooling system at least once a year to make sure it is running efficiently all year long. It will help improve your gas mileage, is more environmentally-friendly, and it will keep you feeling more patient and calm as you drive on.

Take care of any necessary air conditioner repair as soon as possible so that you can finish out the summer in style. For help with vehicle maintenance issues, including an air conditioner service, contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information. Visit Your Auto Shop for a Pre-Trip Vehicle Check!

Headed out on that long-awaited-for summer road trip? Have a pre-trip vehicle check at your preferred auto shop a couple of weeks beforehand to help ensure the safety and reliability of your vehicle. If any service or repair is needed, your auto shop will have time to perform any necessary service or repairs.

If you are looking for quality Cooling Repair Princeton MN than find our dedicated Auto Center Princeton MN shop. Also meet our Engine Rebuild Princeton MN mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

Some people spend months planning their summer trips. Car problems can be a real hassle, not to mention expensive! Don’t spend your precious vacation time and money in an auto shop.

Of course, that unexpected flat tire or break-down could still happen, but with the help of your auto shop, you can be as prepared as possible. Check out:

  • Tires – check air pressure, tread, and look for bulges or bald spots. Under-inflation lowers fuel efficiency and increases the risk of tire damage. Uneven wear indicates a need for a wheel alignment. You may need to purchase new tires before your trip.
  • Hoses and belts – These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering, and cooling system. They can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose, or show other signs of excessive wear.
  • Filters and fluids – These include the motor oil, the power steering, brake, and transmission. Check the antifreeze/coolant mixture, as well as the windshield washer solvent.
  • Lights (interior and exterior) – If needed, your auto shop can replace any burned-out bulbs.
  • Windshield and wiper blades – Replace wipers as necessary for those summer rain storms. Don’t drive with a cracked windshield—it will only get worse!
  • Brakes -- Make sure you stop in good time when you step on the pedal.
  • Battery -- The battery connection should be clean, tight and corrosion-free.
  • Tune up – A pre-trip tune up will help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy.
Reduce the chance of unplanned, costly car trouble by having any necessary maintenance or auto repair performed at your trusted auto shop before hitting the road.

If you want a full-service auto center to service your vehicle, contact our ASE-Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information. When Should I Get New Tires?

It’s inevitable that all tires, over time, get old and worn out. It can be puzzling in trying to determine when it’s time to purchase new tires. Many drivers want to wait as long as possible before putting out the expense.

Other than a tire specialist’s opinion, there are several visual signs indicating that new tires are necessary.

If you are looking for dedicated Tires Princeton MN your search can be over now with our Rum River Car Battery Princeton MN Shop. Also find our quality Alternators Princeton MN for your car safety.

Five Visual Symptoms to watch for:

  1. Tire tread depth less than 1/16th of an inch – If you regularly drive on wet or slick pavement, more than this is better and safer. If there is less than 1/16th of an inch depth remaining, take your car into a tire service center and ask about purchasing new tires.
  2. Newer tires have tread wear indicator bars. These bars gradually begin to appear as the tread wears down. They appear as flat rubber bars running perpendicular to the direction of the tread itself. If more than one or two of these are visible, the tread is getting low and it’s time to have your tires checked.
  3. Tracks or cuts in the sidewall - Do a visual check of the sidewalls or your tires looking for grooves or cracks. This could be a sign that your tire is developing an air leak (or worse, ready to blow out). If the cracks in the sidewall are starting to look serious, have them checked. You may need new tires.
  4. Bulge or blister on the outer surface of the tire – If you see these, it means the tire is beginning to weaken. This weak spot can cause a sudden blow out, and cause you to lose control of the car. So keep a close watch on any tire bulges and blisters that are apparent.
  5. Extensive vibration while driving - There can be any of a number of causes for the vibration, but it could indicate an internal problem in a tire. Even if the tire isn't the root cause of the vibration, the vibration could damage the tire and wear it prematurely. If this is the case, have your tires checked.
Be sure to take care of your tires before something goes wrong! A tire failure while you're driving can be catastrophic-- causing your car to go out of control or leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Affordable Transmission Repair?

Unfortunately, the average driver knows little about transmission service. When they hear the words "transmission repair," all they can see are big dollar signs in front of their eyes! By taking time to gain an understanding of the various terms and methods of transmission repair, their fear and confusion will lessen.

If you are looking for quality Transmission Repair Princeton MN than find our dedicated Car Service Princeton MN shop. Also meet our Wheel Alignment Princeton MN mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

A little research on transmission service can be helpful in understanding what it means when your auto mechanic refers to a "minor transmission service" or a "major transmission repair."

Some auto mechanics want to make transmission repair a little more affordable for their customers. Some adjustments or repairs can be made without removing the unit from the vehicle--less costly than a complete overhaul or replacement. Other types of repair can only be resolved by removing the transmission from the vehicle. Take a look at some general types of transmission repair:

In-Car Repairs – Less costly than having to remove the unit from the vehicle.

  • Improper shifting: A computer-controlled unit may receive the wrong signals, or it may not react properly to a computer command. The computer may simply need to be reset. In a non-computer-controlled transmission, the throttle cable can be adjusted. Or, if the vehicle has a vacuum modulator, it can be adjusted, making sure that there are no vacuum leaks. In some older transmissions, bands can be adjusted to resolve "slipping" (when an engine races while shifting from one gear to the next).
  • Resealing: Most external fluid leaks can be resealed with the unit remaining in the car. An exception is the front seal—it must be removed to gain access to the leak.
  • Out-of-the-Car Repairs –Because these repairs require more hours of labor and involve various components that may need to be replaced, they are more costly.
  • Rebuilding: During this process, the transmission is removed and completely disassembled. Each part is inspected for wear and damage, and then depending on its condition, either cleaned or replaced. Parts that have friction surfaces (such as bands and clutches, seals and gaskets), are typically replaced.
  • Replacement: This option replaces the transmission with another rebuilt or remanufactured unit. This is more expensive, but you can be on your way much faster than the first.

Quality Oil Changes Pay Big Dividends!

Everyone is looking for a return on their investment. As a vehicle owner, your vehicle is one of the biggest purchases you may make (outside of your residence).  Some people try to skimp on oil changes, believing they are saving money. They think that because they aren't having any car problems they don't need to pay the price for high-quality oil changes.

If you are looking for Oil Changes Princeton MN Replacement than find Rum River Auto caring with best Car Maintenance Princeton MN services. Also find Air Conditioner Repair Princeton MN to have safe driving.

The truth is, it is possible for problems to exist before any symptoms are noticeable. Using inferior oil can cause damage that may not be noticed until later down the road, costing more in the long run with engine problems.

A big pay-off for quality oil changes is that your auto mechanic can check out the other systems of your car for any pending problems at the same time.

Why use high quality oil?

Inferior motor oils can deposit harmful contaminants into the engine's lubricating system. Even before there are any visible symptoms of problems, damage may have already occurred, and the engine's performance level may not be brought back to normal. For maximum engine protection, it's worth the extra cost for a high quality, warranty-backed oil change. Regular oil changes ensure better lubrication for the protection and longevity of your engine.

Good-quality motor oil keeps contaminants separated and held in suspension. Poor quality oils can contribute to sludge build-up formed by a combination of dirt, soot, partially burned fuel, oxidized motor oil, leaked coolant and condensed water vapor produced during combustion. Regular oil changes will drain these contaminants out with the oil, rather than left behind to create sludge.

A Rule of Thumb: Your vehicle should have an oil change service about every 3,000 miles, or every three months. If in doubt, check your owner's manual or ask your auto mechanic for guidance on oil changes and other maintenance issues.

Looking for quality oil changes at affordable prices? Steering Problems? It could be the Wheel Alignment!

Has your car developed steering problems after navigating winter's icy roads filled with potholes? When driving on a straight level road, does your car pull or drift to one side or the other? Or are you feeling too much "play" in the steering wheel? It is hard for the average driver to know exactly what is causing the problem. Is it due to a poor car alignment or damage to the suspension or braking system?

If you are looking for Wheel Alignment Princeton MN than find our dedicated Automotive Service Princeton MN Services shop. Also find Exhaust Systems Princeton MN to have safe driving.

To determine whether your vehicle needs an alignment service, tire rotation, tires balanced, or some other type of repair, a skilled auto mechanic will look at four basic issues:

  1. Eliminate tire problems:
    • Are all four tires inflated to the recommended pressure?
    • Is the tread and tire size the same on both front wheels?
    • Is there unusual tread wear or damage?
  2. Examine the front-end alignment in rear-wheel drive vehicles:
    • Toe-in -- The front of each tire, when driving straight, points slightly to the centerline of the vehicle so that each tire has equal traction (i.e., bite) when cornering.
    • Castor -- The vertices angle of the centerline of the tire from front to back. Unless the ball joints, control arm bushings, or king pins are seriously worn, the castor won't vary much.
    • Camber -- The vertical angle of the centerline of the tire perpendicular to the cross-section of your car.
  3. Perform a road test:
    • When driving on a straight level road, does your car pull to the left or the right?
    • Are there scraping, whining or grinding sounds coming from the front?
    • Are the front wheels tracking in the same groove as the back wheels?
  4. Check for other car problems:
    • Worn struts or shock absorbers.
    • Worn out or loose wheel bearings, gear box, tie-rod ends, ball joints, upper and lower control arm bushings, and other steering components.
    • Uneven distribution of heavy loads.
    • Poor driving habits--hard cornering, braking, or swerving.
Important Tip: It is wise to take your car for a test drive following a wheel alignment service!

Missing Brake Service?

The braking system is the most critical safety system of your vehicle. Regular brake service will keep your vehicle operating safely with fully functioning brakes. However, some drivers ignore basic brake service because it seems like an inconvenience and they think they are saving a little extra money. Then, all of a sudden, they have trouble stopping in good time due to failing brakes. They are putting the safety of themselves, passengers, and other motorists or pedestrians at risk. So this doesn't happen to you, don't put off professional brake service.

If you are looking for Brake Service Princeton MN Replacement than find Rumriver Auto caring with best Auto Center Princeton MN services. Also find Oil Changes Princeton MN to have safe driving.

To check the safety of your brakes, conduct the following test to see how your brakes perform when stepping on the brake pedal:

  • Does your vehicle keep traveling? Your brakes may need an adjustment, or possibly new linings.
  • Does your vehicle pull to one side or the other? This can be caused by a stuck caliper and fluid leak.
  • Do you feel the brake pedal pulsating? This can be caused by overused brakes that overheat.
  • Do you feel the steering wheel vibrate? The front discs need to be professionally machined or replaced.
  • Do you hear a squealing sound? Squealing can be caused by several issues--the linings are worn and need to be replaced; the drum or disc needs to be machined; the front disc pads are loose or missing their anti-rattle clips; the hardware that attaches the calipers is worn; or the linings are of an inferior quality.
  • Do you hear a grinding noise felt in the brake pedal? Grinding brakes are caused by excessively worn linings which allow the metal part of the pad come in contact with the disc or drum. This problem can quickly ruin the most expensive mechanical parts of the brake system. Stop driving immediately and have your vehicle towed to an auto shop.
  • Does your vehicle bounce up and down when stopping? The shock absorbers may need to be replaced.
Note: There are several issues that may keep your vehicle from operating, but brake trouble compromises the complete safety of your vehicle.

Alternators: Related to Auto Electrical Repair?

A reliable vehicle depends upon the starting and charging systems to work together in harmony. These two systems should be checked regularly by an auto electrical repair mechanic so you don't find yourself stranded with a car that won't run due to a failing alternator and a dead battery.

If you are looking for quality Alternators Princeton MN than find our dedicated Car Service Princeton MN shop. Also meet our Car Axles Princeton MN mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the purpose of alternators, starters and batteries below. The next time your mechanic says your vehicle is due for auto electrical repair, you will understand what it means.
  • Alternators: formerly called electric generators, are mainly used for recharging batteries. An alternator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy which in turn produces an alternating current.
  • Batteries: store electrical energy, used to power the electrical loads (power accessories) of vehicles.
  • Starters: convert the energy stored in the battery into mechanical force that turns the engine when starting.
The primary function of alternators is to replace the electric current that the starter used up to start your car.  It also supports the electrical loads for the accessories.  Simply stated, alternators, starters, and batteries should work together in harmony to ensure a car that starts every time!

Have questions about starters and alternators? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information about auto electrical repair issues. Heating Repair Needed? Find Quality Air Conditioner Service!

Winter was tough! During the frigid temperatures of winter, your A/C/heating unit received a lot of use. It may be time for a heating repair to get your cooling system in order before getting into the hot days of summer. Heating repair may simply mean that you need to add fresh coolant to the radiator. Prevent an urgent air conditioner service later down the road as the temperatures soar

If you are looking for Air Conditioner Service Princeton MN service than find our Car Maintenance Princeton MN. Also meet our Chassis Princeton MN mechanic for your vehicle’s safety.

Because heating repair may be expensive, drivers often want to put off a needed air conditioner service as long as possible. With the introduction of computerized parts, today's A/C system has become more complex. Also, studies have proven the damaging effect of refrigerant to the ozone layer, and its production and use has been limited by law. Because of the environmental regulations governing air conditioning service, auto mechanics are required to be certified and auto shops must use specialized equipment to ensure that harmful chemicals are contained.

Basic knowledge of the A/C system is important. Take a look at the following descriptions of each component:

  • Compressor – Compresses and transfers refrigerant gas by a belt-driven pump fastened to the engine.
  • Condenser – Designed to radiate heat and is usually located in front of the radiator. Hot compressed gases are cooled, condensed, and then become a high pressure liquid as it exits the bottom of the condenser.
  • Evaporator – the heat absorption component which removes the heat and humidity from the inside of your vehicle.
  • Pressure Regulator – Designed to sense the temperature and pressure, and regulate the refrigerant flow to the evaporator.
  • Metering Device –The primary function is to keep the gas and liquid separate, as well as remove moisture and debris.
We recommend an air conditioning service heating repair to make sure that all the parts of your A/C system are working properly. Contact our ASE-Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information about heating repair. How to Communicate with your Auto Shop!

When you take your vehicle to an auto shop, it can be confusing as to what type of work the mechanic is actually going to do. As a vehicle owner, it is up to you to ask questions and make sure you understand the answers. An auto center that you're not familiar with can either make your repair or service a pleasant experience, or one that's not so pleasant.

If you understand auto shop "lingo" you can better understand what your mechanic is saying relating to labor, parts, warranties, and the specific type of repair to be performed. Don't be caught in the dark with regard to cost, time, or the expected vehicle operation.

If you are looking for quality Car Suspension Princeton MN than find our dedicated Auto Center Princeton MN shop. Also find Auto Electrical Repair Princeton MN replacement to have safe driving.

The next time you take your vehicle to an auto shop, here a few tips to help you communicate effectively with your auto mechanic:

  • Ask Questions — Ask for things to be explained in simple terms. To obtain diagnostic information and to understand exactly how you would like to proceed with any car repair, your mechanic should also ask you questions.
  • Don't be in a hurry – Take your time when talking with the mechanic. An on-the-spot diagnosis of the problem may not be the correct one, wasting both your valuable time and money.
  • Be available – Leave a contact number so that the auto center can call you to apprise you of the problem, course of action, and the cost.
  • Understand Policies -- Make sure you understand the auto shop's policies in terms of labor rates, guarantees, warranties, and acceptable methods of payment.
Remember: The more questions you ask and understand before the actual work begins, the more satisfied you will be with the service to your vehicle.

If you want a full-service auto center with high-quality professionals to service your vehicle, contact our ASE- Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information. 3 Common Failures leading to Engine Repair.

The basic purpose of the engine is to convert air and fuel into rotary motion to turn the wheels of your car. It is the heart of the car, pumping air and fuel through its system. If the air and fuel is blocked, it can't be converted into motion, resulting in an urgent engine repair. Wise vehicle owners know that regular engine service by a professional auto mechanic will help prevent a major engine repair down the road.

If you are looking for dedicated Engine Service Princeton MN your search can be over now with our Automotive Service Princeton MN Shop. Also find our quality Tires Princeton MN for your car safety.

There are three main engine components that are prone to failure:

  • Valve train: The valve train consists of valves, rocker arms, pushrods, lifters, and camshaft. Its job is to let air and fuel in and out of the engine at the proper time. The timing is controlled by the camshaft, which is synchronized to the crankshaft by a chain or belt. What wears out? If your car emits grayish/white smoke only when you start it, leaking valve seals may be the culprit. Oil can seep into the combustion chamber, collect there until you start your car, and then burn away.
  • Pistons: Most motors have 4, 6, or 8 pistons which move up and down in the cylinders. The pistons have rings that keep the oil free of fuel and air and prevent it from entering the combustion chamber. What wears out? The rings wear out, allowing fuel and air to dilute the oil, reducing its ability to lubricate. Worn out rings also allows oil from the crankcase to enter the combustion chambers, where it burns and emits a grayish/white smoke from the tailpipe.
  • Crankshaft: The crankshaft rides on bearings, supporting the crankshaft and rods, and connecting the pistons to the crankshaft. As the pistons move up and down, the crankshaft rotates and converts the straight line motion into rotary motion. What wears out? As these bearings wear down over time, you may start to hear a loud knocking noise. This may result in a costly engine repair as the crankshaft has to be removed to machine the surface where the bearings ride, or it may mean replacing the entire crankshaft.

Car Tune-up Checklist.

When you take your vehicle to an auto shop for a tune-up, you are essentially asking technicians to inspect your engine, analyze vehicle performance, and make adjustments as needed. The engine tune up checklist should include both preventative and restorative engine assessment, and final maintenance recommendations. These will vary from vehicle to vehicle based on age, mileage and unique manufacturer recommendations.

If you are looking for Tune Up Princeton MN than find our dedicated Auto Center Princeton MN Services shop. Also find Alternators Princeton MN to have safe driving.

To give you a better idea of what happens during a car tune up, here is a basic tune up checklist:
1. Check visual appearance of spark plugs.  Are they worn? What color are the insulator firing noses? An engine in good condition should have spark plugs with light tan or gray insulator firing noses. Any other color could be the sign of an engine problem.
2. Test the performance of spark plugs. What color is the spark? Is the spark properly igniting the fuel?
3. Check spark plug wires to make sure they are not hard or cracked.
4. Check the fuel filter to make sure it isn't clogged or dirty.
5. Check the engine's fuel pump for proper function.
6. Inspect the engine's fuel injectors to make sure dirt or other deposits are not restricting the amount of fuel that can be delivered to the engine.
7. Make sure fuel injector buildup isn't affecting how the spark plugs fire.
8. Adjust the engine timing and idle if necessary.
9. Check that the PCV valve isn't clogged or leaking.
10. Inspect the vehicle's points and condenser.

Since the age of the vehicle, number of miles, and maintenance history all uniquely affect a vehicle's service needs, it's important to remember that there is not a one-size-fits-all tune up procedure. Remember that some vehicles will require analysis of more engine components than those listed above.

To learn more about the tune up procedure that's right for your vehicle, contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive by calling (763) 389-3811, or go on-line at http://www.rumriverauto.com for more information. Since 1997, our auto repair shop has served vehicle owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca andZimmerman, MN.

8 Car Service Tips It’s Easy!

Following a regular schedule of basic car service is definitely a win-win situation. It not only helps save the environment and our natural resources, but your vehicle will operate more efficiently, increase your driving safety, prolong the life of your vehicle, and save you time and money spent on a costly car repair.

If you are looking for Heating Repair Princeton MN than find our dedicated Car Service Princeton MN Services shop. Also find Wheel Alignment Princeton MN to have safe driving.

Get started on the road to being an environmentally conscious driver with these eight car service tips:

  • Check tires. Under-inflated tires or wheels out of alignment or balance will decrease fuel efficiency. The engine has to work harder to push the vehicle down the road, using more fuel. Properly maintained tires will last longer, meaning fewer tires to be scrapped.
  • Observe speed limits. Driving consistently above 55 mph decreases fuel efficiency significantly. Use cruise-control as much as possible to keep a steady speed, and avoid fast accelerations and jerky stops.
  • Avoid excessive idling. Turn off the engine while waiting. With today's advanced automotive technology, those 10-minute warm-ups on cold mornings are no longer necessary.
  • Remove extra baggage. Less weight means better mileage. Reduce drag by storing luggage in the trunk rather than on the roof.
  • Eliminate unnecessary driving. Consolidate your daily errands, join a car pool, and try to travel when traffic is light to avoid stop-and-go conditions.
  • Regular Tune Up services. A misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30%. Follow the service schedules and replace filters and fluids as recommended in your owner's manual.
  • Keep your A/C in prime condition. Make sure your air conditioner is serviced only by a certified technician. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, almost one third of the gases released into the atmosphere come from vehicle air conditioners.
  • Dispose of used auto fluids properly. Most car repair shops are glad to dispose of used motor oil, anti-freeze, tires, and old batteries for you. You can also call your city or county for recycling sites.
Remember: To ensure that our environment and natural resources are safe for generations to come: operate your vehicle efficiently, maintain it regularly, and dispose of used parts and fluids properly.

Need a premium car service? Our professionals will be happy to help you with any of your car repair issues.
