How Often Should You Get your Car Air Conditioner Serviced?

how often should you get your car air conditioner serviced

The warmer temperatures of summer will still be around for a while and most people still want to stay cool and relaxed in their cars.  Your car air conditioner has been getting a work-out and you’ve noticed that it isn’t getting as cold as it should.  Don’t delay in scheduling a car AC repair.  Your car air conditioner will still get a lot of use as you finish out summer.

Wondering, “How often should you get your car air conditioner serviced?”  The short answer is---at least once a year!  And, any car AC repair should be performed by an ASE certified mechanic. Not only will this keep your ride relaxed, but you will also reap the benefits of improved gas mileage and a more environmentally friendly vehicle.

There are several reasons your car AC is not getting cold:
  • The coolant has lost its effectiveness. Fresh coolant added to the radiator may be all that is wanted to keep your AC cold.
  • The AC’s compressor isn’t able to create a high enough pressure in the system for the refrigerant to cool correctly.
  • A clog in the system allows the high-pressure refrigerant to slowly decompress through the clog.
  • The AC unit is exposed to the extreme heat of the engine, dirt, vibrations, road debris, quick stops, and even run-ins with curbs.  This stress may create small cracks that allow the refrigerant to leakage.
  • The cooling fans could be burned out, poorly mounted, a fan blade is chipped, or there is a blown fuse or burnt-out relay.
  • An electrical issue could be sending a faulty signal caused by a broken wire, bad module and sensors.
Are you wondering how often should you get your car air conditioner serviced?  Call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive for more information about car AC repair and make an appointment.  Since 1997, our auto shop has served vehicle owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN, and Zimmerman, MN.

What is the importance of car maintenance for winter driving?

importance of car maintenance

Winter’s cold temperatures are knocking at the door!  An important part of getting ready for winter is scheduling preventative vehicle maintenance service.  Ask your auto repair technician to perform a thorough checkup of all the systems of your vehicle and of course, be sure to have any compulsory repairs taken care of as soon as possible.  This will ensure that you can drive your vehicle with peace of mind when heading out on icy and snowy roads.

If you have not yet done so, now is the time to take care of these simple vehicle maintenance items so that you are driving as safe as possible:
  • Battery--Cold temperatures reduce a battery’s cranking power.  Cranking power at 0° F is only about half of that at 80° F.  If your battery is worn out, it’s time to replace it!
  • Wiper Blades--Even the best-performing wiper blades start to lose their effectiveness in as little as 6 months. Streaks expanses of glass are sure signs that the blades should be replaced.
  • Windows--Make sure your windows are clear before heading out.  You're a risk to yourself and everyone around if you can’t see.  Use an ice scraper, not the wipers, to remove ice from the windshield. If you park outside, place the wipers in the raised position to keep them from freezing to the windshield.  Keep your windshield-washer reservoir filled with a washer solution that contains an antifreeze agent.  Also, make sure the heater is functioning correctly so that plenty of warm air is being directed to the windshield in the defrost mode.
  • Lights--Inspect that all the vehicle's lights are working correctly and that the lenses are clean so that you'll have optimum visibility at night and other drivers can see you.
  • Oil--Oil thickens when cold, making it harder for the engine to turn over. Normally, you should be using multi-viscosity oil that has a "W" in the viscosity index, providing good oil flow at low temperatures.
  • Radiator, Hoses, and Belts--Have the radiator and heater hoses inspected for cracks, leaks, or contamination from oil. The hoses should be firm yet pliable.  Try to keep your coolant mixture in a 50/50 ratio of antifreeze and water to keep it from freezing until temperatures are well below zero.  Ask your mechanic for the correct mixture for your climate.
  • New Tires--Your safety depends on tire traction.  If your area gets occasional snow, a new set of all-season tires rated to perform well in snow and ice tests should be fine.  If you live where snow and ice are continually present, consider buying winter tires which are made from special rubber compounds and tread patterns to grip snow and ice for optimum traction.  Keep your tires correctly inflated, as tire pressure declines with the thermometer.
  • Brakes--Make sure your brakes are working correctly to meet the challenges of wet and icy roads.  If you feel any vibration, hear screeching, or the brake pedal feels “soft,” have your brakes checked and repaired as soon as possible.
  • Emergency kit--Even if going a short distance, carry a supply of water, snacks, jumper cables, flashlight, road flares, first aid kit, blanket, and cell phone and charger.

What Causes Car Suspension Problems?

what causes car suspension problems

The suspension system of your vehicle consists of springs and shock absorbers that work together to cushion the car from the uneven motion of the four wheels in contact with the road. A sudden shock from a pothole or other obstruction in the road can damage this system.  Over time, these shocks will wear out the components of your vehicle suspension, thus reducing the life of these components.

As an experienced driver, you know that potholes and rough roads are part of life, especially during winter.  Many times, a large pothole in the road ahead can’t be avoided as it could be risky to try to swerve around it.  You find yourself cringing as your car takes the big bump.  Over time those bumps can add up to issues with your vehicle suspension and alignment. A big enough bump can even cause your car to “bottom out,” meaning the bottom of your car could hit the road.

The term “suspension” refers to all of the components that connect the vehicle to the road, such as tires, car axles, and shocks.  Although vehicles may vary in their suspension designs, they are all designed to do three things:

  • Support the vehicle
  • Absorb bumps and other shocks
  • The vehicle turns in response to steering

When your vehicle suspension system goes bad, the results can be risky, as it impacts the steering and stopping the performance of your vehicle.  To regain stability and control of your vehicle, have the shocks, or struts, replaced.  This will also increase stopping performance.

Remember:  Don’t let damage from potholes and other obstacles in the road affect your car’s efficiency and safety.

Wondering what causes car suspension problems?  Call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive for more information about vehicle suspension problems and to make an appointment.  Since 1997, our auto repair shop has served vehicle owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN, and Zimmerman, MN.

Wondering when Should Tires Be Replaced?

when should tires be replaced

With the snowy and icy conditions beginning to hit several parts of the country, drivers are starting to think about putting their winter tires back into service.  When should tires be replaced for winter?  If you live in a climate where the temperatures consistently remain below 45°F, you can go ahead and switch out your summer tires for ice tires, especially if the cold days include icy conditions.

Be sure to have your tires checked and any compulsory tire repair taken care of before installing them and that the tread and inflation are sufficient for snowy conditions.  If your winter tires have reached approximately 4/32" of remaining tread depth, you should consider replacing them before winter arrives in full force!

Here are several safety tips to keep in mind when driving with winter tires:
  • The RMA recommends installing winter tires in sets of four to optimize the performance benefits.  This will help maintain stability and control of your vehicle in severe snow conditions.
  • Traction control or four-wheel drive on your vehicle often gives drivers a false sense of security in winter conditions. Traction control/ABS is designed for vehicle stability, power transmission, and controlled braking. It does NOT optimize traction or grip in winter driving maneuvers.
  • Look for the Severe Ice Conditions Symbol when shopping for winter tires.  It is located on the sidewall, indicating that the tire meets the snow traction standard recognized by the RMA.
After you have removed your summer tires, you will need to store them. Keep them in a cool, dry and preferably shaded or dark location. Store them raised up off the floor on a pallet or rack, sidewall to sidewall.

Remember:  Before re-installing winter tires on your vehicle, have them inspected for possible damage and adequate tread depth.

Need tire repair on your winter tires?  Call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive about when should tires be replaced for winter and make an appointment.  Since 1997, our auto repair shop has served car owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN, and Zimmerman, MN.

Wondering How Often Should You Do Car Maintenance?

how often should you do car maintenance

Do you want to know how often should you do car maintenance and why?  Many vehicle owners don’t understand why following a schedule for vehicle maintenance is so vital.  As long as their car gets them from point A to point B, they think all is fine.

Adhering to the preventative vehicle maintenance schedule makes sure your vehicle keeps operating smoothly and efficiently!  Always refer to your owner's manual or your auto mechanic for the specific service intervals required for your vehicle.

So how often should you do car maintenance?  Here is a common guideline provided by vehicle manufacturers:
  • Every 3,000--7,000 Miles.  Change the oil and filter according to your service manual.  At each oil change, have the transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid and wipers, tires and all exterior lights inspected.
  • Every 15,000--30,000 Miles.  Replace the air filter every 15,000 miles. Every 20,000 miles check the battery and coolant. Replace the fuel filter every 25,000 miles. Every 30,000 miles, replace the power steering fluid and air filter. Check the coolant, radiator hoses, HVAC system, brake pads, and suspension components.
  • Every 35,000--50,000 Miles.  Inspect the battery and replace it if it is not holding a charge or if it 3 to 4 years old. Every 40,000 miles replace the spark plugs and plug wires and check the ignition system and suspension.
  • Every 60,000 Miles.  Replace brake pads and fluid, coolant, radiator hoses, power steering fluid, and timing belt. Check the HVAC, suspension components and tires.  Have the engine, transmission, cooling, brakes and suspension components thoroughly checked.

Tip to Remember:  Keep a vehicle maintenance log.  Maintaining the maintenance schedule can optimize the resale value of your car, help prevent costly repairs, avert potential roadside breakdowns, and increase the driving safety of your vehicle.

Wondering Why Does Your Car Battery Keep Dying?

why does your car battery keep dying

When a battery fails it’s a serious issue that wants instant attention.  Inappropriately, this is generally not at a convenient time or place.  So you may be wondering just why does your car battery keeps dying.   Have your batteries checked and the charge inspected so you will know if it’s time for a car battery replacement.  A checkup of your car battery should be on your maintenance checklist, just like changing the oil, air filter, tires rotation, and windshield wipers.

Here are a few things to check if you are having starting issues:
  1. The headlights were left on.  This will drain a battery if left on overnight.
  2. Battery terminals and cables may be loose, broken, corroded, or calcified,
  3. Extremely hot or cold temperatures.  If your battery is starting to fail, this will accelerate the issue.
  4. The fluid level in the terminals may be too low,
  5. An electrical current is drawing power from the battery even when the car is turned off.  Even small drains, like the memory function in your car radio, may kill a weak battery.
  6. The charging system is going bad.  This may include the starter or the alternator.
Some of these issues are enough to kill a battery on their own, while others are generally coupled with a battery that is already weak or on its last legs.

Are you wondering why does your car battery keeps dying?  Call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive for more information about a car battery replacement and to make an appointment.  Since 1997, our auto repair shop has served vehicle owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN, and Zimmerman, MN.

Why is Wheel Alignment Necessary?

wheel alignment princeton mn

You are possibly wondering what is wrong with your vehicle if it is displaying these four symptoms:
  1. The tires are wearing unevenly,
  2. The car pulls to one side or direction,
  3. Strange vibrations when the car is moving,
  4. The steering feels loose.
The above symptoms are that of a misaligned car.  So why is a wheel alignment necessary?  You might think there isn’t a rush to have your car alignment inspected, but if you wait too long to have a car alignment service, there will be significant repercussions, such as:
  • You will have to replace your tires sooner than usual;
  • You will start having to fill up the fuel tank more often due to poor fuel economy; and
  • Damage could be occurring to other vehicle components, such as brakes, shocks, and suspension.
Check out below why the proper wheel alignment is necessary:
  • Your tires will last longer;
  • Your vehicle will drive smoother;
  • Your wheels will point in the right direction, which means you can cruise without continuously correcting course;
  • Your vehicle will take less energy to keep going, which can save you money at the pump;
  • Your vehicle will handle better, which means it will be safer.
Need to know more about why is a wheel alignment necessary?  Call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive for more information about our car alignment services and to make an appointment. How Often Should Wheel alignment and Tire Balancing be done?

how often should wheel alignment and tire balancing be done

As you get behind the steering wheel of your car and head out, you may start to notice a few steering issues. There is no set schedule as to when you should schedule wheel alignment or tire balancing services.  Because the symptoms of misalignment and lost balancing are so similar, it is difficult to know which issue is the problem that can result in damaged tires and suspension and steering issues.

So how often should wheel alignment and tire balancing be done?  Whenever you start to notice any one or more of the issues listed below:

  • Vehicle pulling to the left or right
  • Uneven or rapid tire wear
  • The steering wheel is crooked when driving straight
  • Squealing tires

Keep an eye on your tires!  To prevent car alignment issues from starting, have the alignment inspected at every other oil change, or at the first sign of premature tire wear.  It is possible to skew the alignment without realizing it, such as hitting curbs, going too fast over speed bumps, hitting potholes too fast, or having an accident, no matter how minor.  The same applies to the balance of your tires.

Both correct car alignment and tire balancing are compulsory for the well-being of your tires, as well as the safety of your vehicle.  Tire balancing should be performed more frequently, while a wheel alignment service is not needed as often.  These easy and inexpensive services are well worth the little bit of time and money to protect your tire investment and enhance the safety of your vehicle.

Need to know how often should wheel alignment and tire balancing be done?  Call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive for more information about car alignment and tire balancing and to make an appointment.  Since 1997, our auto repair shop has served car owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN, and Zimmerman, MN.

Are you Asking, “What Happens When a Starter Goes Out?”

what happens when a starter goes out

What do you hear when you turn your key in the ignition?  Does your engine start-up smoothly and quietly?  Or do you just hear clicking sounds?  At last, the engine turns over and you’re on your way.  If this has happened to you, you will need to know more about what happens when a starter goes out.  Ask your mechanic to inspect the condition of the starter and let you know if you are looking at a pending auto electrical repair

The starter system is designed for repeated use under a variety of weather and road conditions. But the wear and tear of everyday use, extreme conditions and lack of maintenance can all create issues.  There are some symptoms that can indicate a bad or failing starter—many of which can also be caused by the alternator or the battery, key components of the auto electrical system.

What happens when a starter goes out?  Here are six signs to look for:
  1. Slow and intermittent starting.  If the issue is intermittent, it could be loose or dirty wiring or a damaged electrical component that is failing.
  2. Your vehicle won’t start.  When you turn the key, you may hear no sound at all or you may hear a clicking or clanking noise.
  3. The interior lights dim.  This could be a sign of a short circuit in the starter motor’s internal wiring.  If you notice a chugging sound along with the darkening lights, the bearings in the motor may be failing.
  4. You hear grinding noise when the car is starting or running.  This is an indication of a mechanical issue---the gears in the starter motor may be worn or not engaging properly; they may not be disengaging after the engine starts.
  5. A burning smell. The starter system is both electrical and mechanical.  Thus, a malfunction often combines electrical issues with overheated metal components, lubricated with grease, giving off a burning smell.
  6. The starter is soaked with oil. The starter system sits near the bottom of the engine and gets very burning.  If motor oil leaks into the starter motor, it may cause permanent damage.
Need to know more about what happens when a starter goes out?  Call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive for more information about auto electrical repair and to make an appointment and to find out more about signs of car starter going bad.  Since 1997, our auto repair shop has served car owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN, and Zimmerman, MN.

What happens when the Transmission goes out?

what happens when the transmission goes out

If you are having shifting issues, don’t delay in talking to your transmission repair technician.  Because the transmission system is constantly exposed to both heat and stress, it is crucial that you keep up with routine transmission service.  This means that you want to make sure all the many components are correctly lubricated and in good working condition.  Don’t find out the hard way what happens when the transmission goes out!

The key to making sure your vehicle continues to run smoothly and efficiently for many miles is to follow the manufacturer’s service interval recommendations as listed in your owner’s manual.  Usually, this schedule recommends a transmission service between every 60,000 to 100,000 miles.

A transmission service is a vital part of maintaining your vehicle.  Just the normal wear and tear on your transmission creates millions of tiny abrasive metal that fall into your transmission fluid and can cause your transmission to fail.

What is included in a transmission service?
  • The old transmission fluid is drained out, the pan removed and cleaned.
  • A checkup of the drained oil for any indications that there are hidden issues in your transmission.
  • Removal and replacement of the transmission filter.
  • The pan is replaced and a new gasket fitted.
  • The transmission is filled with new, clean oil and tested for leakages.
  • Your car is tested on the road to make sure that it is operational after the transmission service has been completed.
What happens when the transmission goes out?
  • Shifting Issues:  You may find it hard to shift, it won’t stay in the right gear, or you hear a “whining” sound or clunking and thumping sounds when you shift.
  • Worn-out parts:  Worn out transmission parts may find you have to force the gearshift into the next gear, causing your vehicle to lurch or jerk while shifting.
  • Warning light:  If the transmission warning light comes on accompanied by shifting problems, ask your transmission repair technician to run a diagnostic test.
  • Transmission failure:  You may be facing a costly transmission repair, such as a transmission rebuild.

Are you wondering about what happens when the transmission goes out?   Call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive for more information about transmission service and make an appointment.  Since 1997, our auto repair shop has served car owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN, and Zimmerman, MN.

How do I know if my car battery is dying?

what happens when a starter goes out

Are you noticing issues when you start up your car in the mornings?  How about when driving at night and your headlights are too blurry? You may be wondering, “How do I know if my car battery is dying?”  When a battery fails it’s a serious issue that wants instant attention, and commonly not at a convenient time or place.  Ask your mechanic to inspect your battery to see if it’s time for a car battery replacement.

If you’ve had to pay for a premature car battery replacement and want to keep it as long as possible, here are six simple tips to help extend its lifespan.
  1. Combine trips – Consider joining a carpool.
  2. Keep the battery tightly fastened – A loose battery can jiggle connections and cause intermittent electrical connections.
  3. Turn off the lights – When you arrive at your destination, be sure to turn off all lights and unplug electrical devices that use power, such as a cell phone.
  4. Keep the battery terminals clean.  Corrosion inhibits the electrical current that flows from the battery to the engine and other electrical accessories.
  5. Check-up – Have the charge in your battery tested on a regular basis and top-off the cells with water if necessary.
  6. Limit electronic use when idle – This causes a heavy pull of electrical current from the battery and the alternator may not be able to keep up recharging the battery.

How Many Miles Can You Go On An Oil Change?

oil change coupons princeton mn

Many drivers are still asking the question, “How many miles can you go on an oil change?”  The answer continues to be a source of controversy in the automotive industry.  The standard answer used to be every 3 months or 3,000 miles.  Even though some mechanics still recommend the 3,000-mile interval, this advice is now as outdated as car cassette players and road atlases in your glove box.  With today’s modern engines and synthetic oils, some cars can go for many more miles, possibly as many as 10,000.

According to Ford Motor Company, drivers with usual driving habits with vehicles 2008 and newer should change the oil every 7,500 miles or 6 months, or whichever comes first. Drivers with vehicles 2007 and older should change the oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months, or whichever comes first.  Drivers with less typical driving habits with vehicles 2008 and newer should change the oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months, and every 3,000 miles or 3 months for cars 2007 and older.

Even though the mileage interval may be longer, it is still smart to schedule oil changes on a regular basis.  This not only keeps your engine well-lubricated, but it also gives your mechanic the opportunity to check out the condition of other fluids, hoses, and operating systems for any potential issues.

So how many miles can you go on an oil change?  The best advice we can give you is to check the service schedule listed in your owner’s manual.  Do your research before deciding on the oil-change interval for your vehicle, as it can be dependent upon the type of oil used, the age and make of your vehicle, and your driving habits.

Remember to ask your auto shop about their oil change coupons. Many shops offer these coupons to make frequent oil changes more affordable for their customers.

Wondering about how many miles can you go on an oil change?  Call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive about our oil change coupons and to Make an appointment.  Since 1997, our auto repair shop has served car owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN, and Zimmerman, MN.

How Do I Know If My Suspension Is Bad?

vehicle suspension princeton mn

The term “suspension” refers to all of the components that connect the car to the road, such as tires, car axles, and shocks.  Although vehicles may vary in their suspension designs, they are all designed to do three things:
  • Support the vehicle
  • Absorb bumps and other shocks
  • Allow the car to turn in response to steering
Some drivers may be wondering, “How do I know if my suspension is bad?”  If you are experiencing any of the issues below, call your professional auto mechanic to schedule a checkup of the car axles and suspension system.
  1. Excessive bouncing when hitting a bump or pothole.
  2. Vehicle “nose-dives” or “squats” when braking or accelerating.
  3. Tire "cupping" as the rubber wears off the tire each time it hits the ground.
  4. Hydraulic fluid leaking from inside the shock.
It is normal that shocks wear out as the miles add up on your vehicle. They wear out even more quickly when it is compulsory to drive over bumpy streets on a regular basis.  When your suspension system goes bad, the results can be dangerous, as it impacts the steering and stopping the performance of your vehicle.  Replacing the shocks, or struts will improve stopping performance as well as increase vehicle stability and driver control.

Are you wondering, “How do I know if my suspension is bad?”  If you have questions about suspension systems and the effect on car axles, call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive for more information and to make an appointment.  Since 1997, our auto repair shop has served car owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN, and Zimmerman, MN.

Wondering How Often Should You Get Your Car Serviced?

how often should you get your car serviced

Like most motorists, you want to take good care of your vehicle and may wonder how often should you get your car serviced?  Simply stated, follow the suggested maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual for your car.  There are two ways in which you will be reminded as to when to get your car serviced.

  • In-vehicle Maintenance Reminder Systems If you drive a newer car, it possibly has an in-vehicle maintenance reminder system that makes mileage-based schedules out-of-date. These reminder systems take a number of vehicle operating conditions into account and provide an alert on the dash when it is time for an engine oil change, fluid level checks, component inspections, and other vehicle maintenance services.
  • Mileage-Based Maintenance Service Intervals Older cars have service intervals based on mileage. There are generally two different maintenance schedules, one for cars driven in “normal” operating conditions and another for those used in “severe” operating conditions, such as mainly short trips of five miles, extreme climates, stop-and-go driving, towing a trailer or carrying heavy loads.
Tip to Remember:  Plan ahead for vehicle maintenance items by finding a car repair shop and auto technician you can trust before you need them.

How do you know when your Brakes are going bad?

brakes princeton mn

Wondering how do you know when your brakes are going bad?  One sure sign is if it is taking you lengthier to come to a stop at red lights and stop signs.  If this is happening, it is definitely time to schedule a brake service for a checkup of the braking components.

There is no stated schedule in your owner’s manual as to when brakes should be replaced.  It will depend on how your brakes are draining, which is largely determined by your driving style and conditions.

So how do you know when your brakes are going bad? Here are six of the obvious signs that you should be aware of:

  • Noisy brakes – A screeching sound is created when the built-in wear sensors scrape against the brake disc when the pads need replacing.  Metal-on-metal grinding is also a sign that the brake pads are entirely worn down.
  • Vibrating – A warped disc will cause the brake pedal to pulsate under light or moderate braking.
  • Leaking brake fluid – A burning smell while driving could mean brake fluid is leaking onto the hot motor.
  • Longer stopping distances – If you are pushing the brake pedal down to the floor to stop your car, it means it is taking a long distance to come to a stop. Because brake linings wear gradually, it could reach the hazardous stage before you notice it.
  • Steering issues -- If the steering wheel tugs or the car pulls to one side or the other while braking, the front brake pads are worn down too far.
  • Dash Warning light – Some cars have electronic wear indicators that alert the driver if the pads wear down to a specified measurement.  But a visual checkup during a brake service is the still the best way to check the condition of your brakes.

Tip to remember:  Many vehicle owners will ask for a brake inspection at every tire rotation service (about every six months).

Wondering how do you know when your brakes are going bad?  Call our ASE Certified Technicians at Rum River Automotive to make an appointment and to find out more about brake service.  Since 1997, our auto repair shop has served vehicle owners in Princeton, MN and in the surrounding areas of Milaca, MN, and Zimmerman, MN.

Are you wondering How to know if Your Muffler is Bad?

exhaust systems priceton mn

Even today’s newer cars have mufflers as part of their exhaust systems.  As long as cars have combustion engines, they will require some type of exhaust and muffler system.  A muffler not only reduces the noise level created by the engine, it plays a major role in diffusing the toxic fumes away from the passenger cabin. Thus, it is just as vital to keeping up on regular maintenance for your muffler as for the rest of your car.

Wondering how to know if your muffler is bad?  Here are three of the most common, but vital, warning signs that it's time to have the exhaust system checked:

  1. Increase in the exhaust noise level - When the muffler is working correctly, your car should run relatively quiet.  Although, if something is wrong, the noise level will increase dramatically.
  2. Reduced gas mileage - Well-tuned exhaust systems typically produce the best fuel efficiency. If you're filling up your tank more often than usual, but your driving habits have stayed the same, could be a sign of a muffler issue.
  3. Smell of exhaust fumes - If you smell exhausted fumes inside your car's cabin, there could be a leak in your exhaust system. Your muffler should be funneling these fumes outside and away from your car; but if they're going inside the car, they can be fatal over time. Have your car’s exhaust system inspected out as soon as possible.

If you’re noticing any of the above signs of issues in the exhaust system, don’t procrastinate!  You really won’t save money as a minor issue can easily and quickly turn into a much larger and more costly issue.

What Car Maintenance Needs To Be Done?

Vehicle Maintenance Priceton MN

There is still plenty of winter weather to come so remember it’s vital to make sure your car can continue to meet the challenge of hazardous winter driving!  Preventative vehicle maintenance is vital in any season, but knowing what car maintenance needs to be done for winter should take top priority.  Ask your mechanic about the items that should be on the winter vehicle maintenance checklist to help prevent an emergency on the road.

What car maintenance needs to be done to finish out winter in safety?
  1. Use winter wipers – These wipers are equipped with rubber that keeps ice from collecting on them.  Replace them when spring arrives as they are heavier than regular wipers.
  2. Winter/snow tires – These tires use special compounds engineered to resist hardening in cold temperatures, thus providing better traction.  Inspect the tread and air pressure commonly.  Keep chains in the trunk and know how to install them.
  3. Keep washer fluid reservoir full – You will be using a lot of windshield washer fluid when driving in snow and ice.  Keep a spare bottle in the trunk.
  4. Winter safety kit – Include an ice scraper, bag of sand, shovel, flares, extra antifreeze, flashlight and batteries, tool kit, including jumper cables, and lug wrench and jacks for changing a tire, blankets and extra warm clothing and boots, plus non-perishable food and water.  Don’t forget a charger for your cell phone.
  5. Recommended vehicle maintenance – Have that needed oil change, a new battery, radiator inspection, and make sure you have the correct antifreeze to water ratio.  Inspect all belts and hoses, spark plugs, wires, and cables.
  6. Fill up the tank – A full fuel tank can help prevent gas line freeze ups. If you get stranded, your engine may be the only thing to keep you warm until help arrives.
  7. Keep rear-window defroster in working order – Being unable to see behind you could create unsafe driving conditions.
A Word to the Wise:  It’s true that something can happen any time of year, but it is especially hazardous in winter!  If the roads are too dangerous, stay home if at all potential.  Don't risk an accident!

Do you Know What Does an Engine Rebuild Consist of?

 engine rebuild princeton mn

Most vehicle owners have heard of an engine rebuild but not many really know what does an engine rebuild consist of and why it is compulsory. There are two main reasons for an engine rebuild:

  • Worn engine bearings -- The moving parts of the engine are mounted on bearings lubricated by the engine oil so that they move freely.  When the bearings become worn, they produce loud knocking sounds and can ultimately cause failure of the engine.  The bearings are actually built to last thousands of mines, but wear is accelerated when a vehicle is not maintained correctly and is run on low levels of oil or even dirty oil.
  • Poorly-sealed piston rings -- Piston rings to seal in the expanding gasses created by the burning of gasoline within the engine. As piston rings wear, they no longer seal the cylinders correctly, resulting in a phenomenon called "blow-by.”  Blow-by occurs when crankcase oil escapes past worn rings and is burned with the fuel mixture in the cylinder. This may be the reason that older engines have an unnecessary amount of smoke in the exhaust.

What does an engine rebuild consist of?  First, the "short block" or lower half of the engine is removed, disassembled, and then cleaned so that the condition of the block can be correctly assessed. Depending on the condition of the external parts of the engine, the piston rings, bearings and occasionally the pistons themselves are replaced. The internal surfaces of the cylinders are also reconditioned to ensure that the new piston rings can form a correct seal with the cylinder walls. The cylinder head may also be renovated at a similar time.

Do you understand the benefits of an engine rebuild? First, you know that everything has been closely checked and now has new parts. Second, the worn parts are recycled to help reduce the amount of scrap in the environment.  The third, and the best, the benefit is the connectivity and compatibility with the existing ECU and electrical system.

Wondering How Often Should You Replace Tires?

tire repair princeton mn

Did you realize that the four tires on your car are the only parts that really touch the road?  This means that the right inflation pressure, equal tread wear, correct wheel alignment and balancing are not to be taken lightly.  An important part of good car maintenance is taking care of your tires.  Though, at some point in time, your tires will go beyond the point of safety when it comes to tire repair.

Are you wondering when should tires be replaced?  This will depend on some factors, but normally, new tires will last about 50,000 miles.  Here is a list of the factors that affect the actual lifespan of your tires:
  • What is the quality of the tires?
  • Do you have summer or all-season tires?
  • How are the tires mounted?
  • What is the treadwear rating?
  • How do you drive the vehicle?
You can do your part in helping prevent urgent tire repair.  There are 3 main elements of basic tire service:
  • Correct inflation -- Correctly inflated tires means your vehicle is getting optimal contact with the road, improved fuel economy, and more even tread wear.
  • Tire Rotation -- Moving the tires around to a different position on your vehicle will make sure they wear out in an even pattern, improving traction. Normally, tires should be rotated every six months, or 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or about every other oil change.
  • Wheel Alignment and Balancing -- Balancing is done with wheel weights so that the tire rolls smoothly down the road. The key to correct alignment is adjusting the angles of the tires so that they make optimal contact with the road.
Remember:  Basic tire service ensures you will get the most miles out of your tires while maximizing the safety of your vehicle.

Wondering what are the Symptoms of a Bad Radiator?

radiator service princeton mn

This is lots of winters yet to come.  Don’t find yourself stranded on the side of the road wondering about what are the symptoms of a bad radiator.  You also need to make sure you have the right antifreeze/water mixture to keep your engine from freezing.  If you have not already scheduled radiator service, don’t delay any longer.

What are the symptoms of a bad radiator?  Take a look at the 3 issues below:
  • Overheating – If the coolant cannot get to where it wants to go, your engine could overheat, even in freezing temperatures.  Make sure the hoses aren’t clogged or that the level of antifreeze/coolant isn’t too low.  If you see a warning light on the dash or the temperature gauge rising to the hot zone, get your car off the road instantly to prevent damage to your engine.
  • Leaking – If you see a puddle on the garage floor or warning the smell of antifreeze, there may be a cracked hose or the radiator is corroded with rust.  Radiator hoses and clamps should be checked frequently.
  • Smoking – If there is smoke coming from under the hood, it may simply be that coolant has leaked onto the motor and is being burnt off. Though, smoke coming from the muffler could mean that the head gasket has been damaged from the engine overheating.
Regular radiator service is vital to inspect the hoses and radiator unit for leaking and to make sure the antifreeze/water mixture is still effective.  A flush of the cooling system may be suggested, or simply want to be topped off.
